Legendary Australian country singer and comedian Chad Morgan has died at the age of 91, marking a seven-decade run in the music industry.

The Australian country music legend died in hospital in Gin Gin near Bundaberg on the evening of New Year’s Day.

Mr Morgan was born on February 11, 1933 in Wondai, a regional town in South Burnett Region of Queensland.

Known for his vaudeville style of country music and signature smile, Mr Morgan was first discovered on Australia’s Amateur Hour after entering the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1952.

Chad Morgan was known for his wit and “larger-than-life personality”.

Affectionately known as the “Sheik of Scrubby Creek”, the musician’s career spanned more than seven decades, contributing a verse to the Gordon Parson song, A Pub with No Beer, made famous by Slim Dusty, and releasing more than 20 albums.

The musician was inducted into the Tamworth Hands of Fame in 1979 and Role of Renown in 1987.

In 2004, Mr Morgan received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) and was the first person to achieve a lifetime achievement award at the 2010 Country Music Association of Australia Awards.

In August 2024, the Chad Morgan Room – a permanent exhibition in Childers, near Scrubby Creek – opened in his honour, showcasing the memorabilia, artwork and photography from his long-spanning career.

He announced his retirement in early 2024 after more than 70 years in the industry.

The music legend’s death triggered an outpouring of grief from his native Queensland and the country’s music community.

In a tribute, country music singer Troy Cassar-Daley described Mr Morgan as “one of the funniest comedy minds I’ve ever witnessed on stage”.

“He was always such an individual that’s what endeared him to so many in our industry,” he said.

“The last show is over old mate and the curtains are now closed always leaving them wanting more.”

Family of fellow country music icon Slim Dusty, who died in 2003, described Mr Morgan as a “truly unique, one of a kind larrikin”.

“Like many today, we are saddened to learn of the passing of Chad Morgan,” he said.

“Chad was a contemporary of Slim & Joy’s and travelled the same roads for decades entertaining audiences with his remarkable stories and humour.

“Our love to family and friends as we all remember Chad”.

Singer songwriter Angus Gill said he had visited Mr Morgan last year on the eve of the country star’s 91st birthday.

In a Facebook post, Mr Gill said the pair traded stories before Mr Morgan showed him his expansive guitar collection.

“I always admired the fact Chad ran his own race,” Mr Gills said.

“He didn’t play games. He created his own luck and was and will always be adored by the masses.

“A masterful entertainer. A comic genius. An Australian icon. Rest in peace my mate.”

Former Queensland Premier Steven Miles said Mr Morgan’s music “brought joy and laughter to so many Australians”.

“I’ve had the privilege of meeting Chad a few times over the years,” he said.

“He was generous with his time and a true larrikin.

“Sending my deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

Mr Morgan’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief, with many remembering him for his wit and larrikin personality.

One Nation senator Pauline Hanson also wrote that Mr Morgan was a “wonderful Queensland icon” who’s songs “put a smile on the face of so many Aussies”.

The confirmation of the musician’s death was shared on his website.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Chad Morgan, our beloved Australian country music legend,” a statement read.

“Chad’s unmistakeable voice and larger-than-life personality will leave an indelible mark on the Australian country music community, and his warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”

The tribute recalled the country musician’s devotion to “bringing joy, laughter, and memorable melodies” to listeners globally with his “signature sound, blending traditional country with a sense of fun and authenticity”.

“A true storyteller, his songs — infused with wit, charm, and emotion — captured the essence of country life and the human experience,” the tribute continued.

“Chad’s career spanned many decades, during which he earned the respect and admiration of fellow musicians and fans alike.

“From chart-topping hits to unforgettable live performances, his music created memories that will last a lifetime.

“Known for his humility and sense of humour, Chad was always ready to share a laugh, offer a helping hand, or lift someone’s spirit with his music.

“Chad Morgan’s music and spirit will live on forever.
“His presence, both on and off the stage, will be greatly missed by family, friends, and his dedicated fan base around the world.”
