Yahoo Lifestyle The New "Sinners" Trailer Is Bloody And Hot — Here Are 10 Details You Should Absolutely Know About The Film Before It Hits Theaters
Sinners is back with an all-new, much longer trailer, and I didn't even want to blink because I was afraid to miss something!
When news first broke about Sinners, it was being teased as a vampire film written and directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan. And we all know whenever these two talented men link up, magic is created (cough, cough Black Panther, Creed, Fruitvale Station), so I was sold on the concept as soon as I heard they were reuniting.
Four months ago, Warner Bros. dropped the official trailer, and it left just enough mystery to leave the viewer wondering, "What exactly is this about?" It begins with a distraught Michael sitting on a stoop, skin stained with blood, and ends with Michael shooting off rounds from a machine gun. Sprinkled in between is a looming darkness that has settled on the town where the film is based and hints of the residents being possessed.
Well, yesterday, most of my questions went out the window because they dropped an extensive second official trailer, and it's packed with more horror, chills, characters, and twists! In less than 24 hours, it's already racked in over 3.7 million views, and it's still growing.
It's almost like Entertainment Weekly knew I needed to flesh out my thoughts about the new visuals because they invited Michael and Ryan for an episode of Trailer Breakdown, where they shared insight about the scenes.
The film follows twin brothers who are trying to leave their troubled past behind them as they return to their hometown for a fresh start. Unfortunately, an even greater evil is waiting for them there.
Here's what we learned:
1.Michael found it challenging to play twins Elijah and Elias Smoke.
Michael B. Jordan: "Playing twins was definitely a challenge. It was part of the reason why I wanted to take the role. Ryan really built two characters that were very much so different, but kind of the same as well. Stack (Elijah) is going to be in red throughout the movie, and Smoke's going to be in blue...that's the easiest way to tell them apart."
2.The film takes place over the course of a day.
Ryan Coogler: "The film takes place over one day, so these were the outfits for the day."
3.Michael's performance left Ryan shook!
RC: "First day of shooting, you walked on the set as Smoke and I never told you this, but it unnerved me, like quite a bit. It was a trip. I was like, 'Aw shit, this is gonna be a wild ride,' cuz it didn't feel like I was talking to you. That's a beautiful performance you put down. Knowing you, you're closer to Stack."
MBJ: "Yeah, the people that know me know me, for real, I think they're going to enjoy it because they'll see the side of me that I don't show people."
RC: "It's in there...thankfully [laughs]," Ryan said referring to Michael having a little Smoke in him.
MBJ: "Yeah, you don't wanna see me as Smoke [laughs]."
RC: "Smoke's a pretty scary guy."
4.The film highlights the prohibition era in the South.
RC: "The film takes place in 1932 and if y'all know your American history, that was in the waning years of the Volstead Act, which made the production and sale, and consumption of alcohol illegal. The shot, that's beer bottles there on the back of a truck that's hidden out in the back woods of Mississippi. That's the equivalent of having an illicit drug today — the era of prohibition."
5.Sinners plays into a lot of modern-day complications within American society.
RC: "A lot of the film explores the dichotomy of American culture, and the relationship between the church and the juke joint is often a conflicted one, but it's the same type of environment. You'll see the same people Saturday night acting crazy, then Sunday morning they're acting holy."
MJB: "It was good to get those juxtaposed images — daytime and nighttime."
RC: "Nighttime, yeah, things get a little funky."
6.Jack O'Connell plays the main antagonist.
RC: "This is our first look at Jack O'Connell's character Remmi (Remmick), who is a lot of fun [laughs]. He's our main antagonist for a good chunk of the film. The twins are the scariest characters that people are interacting with until they meet this guy who's bringing a whole 'nother element to the characters that we hopefully fall in love with at this point. He's playing a different type of game...different set of rules."
7.Hailee Steinfeld is the character that needs to be "saved," but not in the way that you think.
RC: "He's [Jack] talking to Hailee about saving her, and she thinks he's talking about in a religious way. Mary [Hailee] sees herself as past that, but he's talking about something else entirely...a little more supernatural."
8.Legendary actor Delroy Lindo plays a significant role amongst the cast.
MBJ: "Mr. Delta Slim. So, Delta Slim is a hometown hero as well — a phenomenal piano player. He gets convinced and bribed a little bit to come join the gang for the night, and go on this little adventure with us. He ends up being a pillar of strength amongst the group when things get a little crazy...a little supernatural. He adds a lot of..."
RC: "Everything!"
MBJ: "Everything! He did a phenomenal job."
9.Ryan got to work with a lot of people he admired on this film, but he was most excited about Omar Benson Miller joining the film.
RC: "This film was an incredible opportunity to work with actors that I've always admired, that I haven't worked with before — Delroy, Hailee, Jack — but Omar was at the top of the list. I think he was the only person that really could've played this character Cornbread, who's also like a neighborhood guy. He knows the twins and has history with them, but he's also just a guy trying to get by at a time when it was very difficult to do that."
10.The cast broke character A LOT during this Cornbread scene.
RC: "He's great in the movie but this particular scene is my favorite. It was so hard to shoot [laughs]!"
MBJ: "So hard to shoot but so rewarding. Thanks for putting up with us, man."
RC: "Yeah, you did so good."
MBJ: "Cuz we definitely broke a lot during this sequence. There was a lot of laughter."
