Seth Meyers Mocks Trump’s Laughable Excuse for Hate-Watching His Show
Seth Meyers mocked President-elect Donald Trump in his “Closer Look” segment Wednesday—all without mentioning his name.
The Late Night host began the segment with a warning to Pete Hegseth fans that he was about to make fun of the defense secretary nominee.
“You might be saying, ‘Seth, why would a Pete Hegseth fan be watching your show?’ Fair point,” Meyers said.
He explained, “It has come to my attention that sometimes people who do not care for me get stuck watching my show. And to those people, I would just say: You have my sympathy, and I hope you get a TV soon that allows you to change the channel.”
Meyers moved on without elaborating, but the audience sure seemed to know exactly what he was referring to: Trump’s 1:24 a.m. post on Truth Social Tuesday, in which the president-elect launched into a scorched-earth rant about Meyers' show.
Trump wrote: “How bad is Seth Meyers on NBC, a ‘network’ run by a truly bad group of people — Remember, they also run MSDNC. I got stuck watching Marble Mouth Meyers the other night, the first time in months, and every time I watch this moron I feel an obligation to say how dumb and untalented he is, merely a slot filler for the Scum that runs Comcast.”
Trump continued, “These guys should be paying a lot of money for the right to give these “in kind” contributions to the Radical Left Democrat Party. These are not shows or entertainment, they are simply political hits, 100% of the time, to me and the Republican Party. Comcast should pay a BIG price for this!”
The post is one of many examples over the years of Trump publicly ranting about late-night comedians like Stephen Colbert or Jimmy Kimmel.
Trump’s dislike of Meyers, however, apparently goes back the longest. Meyers harshly roasted Trump at the 2011 White Correspondents' Dinner, in a speech that some pundits believe spurred Trump to run in 2016.
“Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising since I just assumed he was running as a joke,” Meyers said at the event.
Trump criticized Meyers’ roast afterward, telling reporters, “I thought Seth Meyers, frankly, his delivery was not good—he’s a stutterer and he really was having a hard time.” Fourteen years later, it doesn’t seem like Trump’s changed his mind.
