The new film, which is set for release on Netflix on Friday, Jan. 17, is Diaz’s first since 2014. In the mid-2010s, the Charlie’s Angel star decided to step back from her work in Hollywood so that she could devote more time to her family. She and her husband, Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden, have been married since 2015 and share two children: daughter Raddix, 5, and son Cardinal, who was born last spring.

Diaz opened up about her decision to hit pause on her career while appearing on a panel at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit hosted by Fortune last October.

“For me, it was just something I had to do,” she explained. "It felt like the right thing for me, to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn’t care about anything else—nobody’s opinion, nobody’s success, no one’s offer, no one’s anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and looking after and building the life that I really wanted to have.”

When asked why she decided to return to acting for Back in Action, Diaz said it felt like “the right time for my family” and credited Madden with encouraging her to accept the role.

“And also, Jamie Foxx—I couldn’t say no to Jamie,” Diaz added of the actor, with whom she has now starred in three movies. "He said, ‘Come with me,’ and I was like, ‘OK, let’s do it.’”
