Sam Moore, Iconic 'Soul Man' Singer, Dead at 89

Sam Moore, an influential R&B artist and half of the iconic soul duo Sam & Dave, has died. He was 89.

News of his passing was confirmed by his publicist Jeremy Westby, who said in a statement shared with Parade that Moore died at his home in Coral Gables, Fla., on the morning of Friday, Jan. 10 due to complications while recovering from surgery.

Further details regarding his exact cause of death were not immediately made available.

Moore was best known for being the tenor half of the 1960s duo Sam & Dave, along with his late partner Dave Prater. Together, they were responsible for a number of R&B hits, including the 1966 single "Hold On, I'm Comin'" and 1968's "I Thank You."

But their biggest hit was the 1967 song, "Soul Man," which would go on to be covered by The Blues Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Prince and more.

They earned a total of four Grammy nominations throughout the '60s, including one win at the 10th Annual Award Show for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance for "Soul Man."

The twosome eventually parted ways in 1970, and Prater died in a car accident in 1988.

The duo was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and in 2019, Moore was honored with the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Following the news of his death on Friday, his publicist shared a heartfelt message about Moore's impact on the music industry, writing via LinkedIn, "Sad news in the music world as we mourn the passing of the legendary Soul Man, Sam Moore."

"A Grammy winner and an early member of the Rock Hall of Fame, Sam Moore has left behind a legacy that will forever resonate with fans worldwide. Rest in peace, my friend."

Moore is survived by his wife, Joyce Moore, whom he married in 1982, as well as his daughter Michell, and two grandchildren.
