Ruby and Kevin first started their joint YouTube channel "8Passengers" in 2014, where they documented their family's life together. The channel amassed over 2 million subscribers, and over time, viewers expressed concern over Ruby's extreme parenting methods. The Utah-based YouTuber and Hildebrant later started a podcast together, where they advocated for strict parenting styles until August 2023, when they were arrested for aggravated child abuse.

Ruby and Kevin's eldest daughter Shari recently opened up about the abuse she and her siblings faced in her new memoir The House of My Mother: A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom on Jan. 7.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Shari shared that she "witnessed the damage of what happens when your life is put online" and believes that “there’s no ethical way to do it.”

In her memoir, she recalled that her mother Ruby “was never warm or kind” to her growing up and would feel uncomfortable by some of the content she would share on their channel. By the time Shari left for college at Brigham Young University, she remained concerned for her younger siblings and even called Child Family and Services to ensure their safety.

Since Ruby's arrest and sentencing, Shari has since confirmed that she is done "sharing my private life” with the world.
