Rob Lowe's son and costar John Owen Lowe had a mental breakdown over his dad during “Unstable” filming

The second season of their Netflix comedy arrives in August.

Living in the shadow of Rob Lowe is not an easy thing.

Son John Owen Lowe, who decided to follow his father into the entertainment industry, recounted to Andy Cohen Thursday on Radio Andy a time when it was just too much for him.

They were working on their show, Netflix comedy Unstable, which both Lowes and My Name Is Earl producer Victor Fresco are credited with creating.

"Like two weeks into filming the first season," John Owen explained, "I had a legitimate little mental breakdown. Like, I walked off set, and I went into my trailer, and I went ‘Oh, s—.’ I was trying to become my own person and get distance away from him, and I am now his costar. My face is next to his on a one-sheet, and I will be doing press with him. It was like all these realizations dawned on me."

He remembered calling his representatives, who helped him put things in perspective.

"They were like, 'Chill out,'" 29-year-old Lowe recounted. "They helped me find the healthy perspective, where it's like, you should feel grateful that you get to do this, for a variety of reasons. Namely, my dad won't be around forever. It'll be amazing that we shared this together. And B, it's hard to work in the entertainment industry."

Lowe acknowledged that Unstable was "a terrible idea in regards to my mental health, that's for sure."

The show, which premiered in March 2023 and returns Aug. 1, centers on a father-son duo with a father who's an eccentric biotech genius and son who lives in his shadow.

In real life, the Lowes worked together on Rob's Fox show, 9-1-1: Lone Star. John Owen is credited with writing dozens of episodes for the drama. He said that experience helped inspire Unstable.

"I started as a staff writer. I was the lowest on the totem pole. I worked my way up to story editor and worked hard and learned a lot, but I was going insane," he said. "Essentially, you're writing for him. And I ended up writing a lot of stuff for him, and... it drove me bonkers."
