Bruce Springsteen Provides Rare Health Update on Wife's 'Tough Disease'

Bruce Springsteen is letting fans know how his wife, Patti Scialfa, is doing after she revealed her cancer diagnosis to the world last month.

The "Born in the U.S.A." singer sat down with Good Morning America personality George Stephanopoulos for a new special, Bruce Springsteen: Backstage and Backstreets, which premieres on ABC on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 10/9c.

In a new preview of the upcoming interview posted on the morning show's Facebook page on Tuesday, Oct. 15, he shares some insight into the "tough" battle his fellow songwriter and guitarist is facing.

"She's doing good," he told the GMA anchor, revealing that they "caught it early, which was important."

But, the "tough disease" is "very fatiguing," he explained, which likely accounts for why Scialfa hasn't been seen performing with the E Street Band, which she's been a part of since 1984, recently.

Her absence seemingly accounts for why they finally chose to reveal her diagnosis, multiple myeloma—a type of blood cancer—which she first received back in 2018.

"She hadn't played in the band in a long time, and people, I don't think, knew why. 'Where's Patti?'" Springsteen hypothesized.

The revelation came in Springsteen's new documentary, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes preparation for the band's 2023-2024 world tour.

"Touring has become a challenge for me," Scialfa shared in the documentary. “This affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” she elaborated. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage, and that’s been a treat."
