When it comes to Australian reality TV, there’s no show quite like The Real Housewives of Melbourne. The iconic series premiered in 2014 and quickly became a fan favourite within the global franchise thanks to its chaotic drama, glamorous fashion, and hilarious one-liners (who can forget ‘Lydiot’).

While the most recent season of RHOM aired in 2021, there have been rumblings over the past few months that season six is in the works. The Herald Sun reported in January that a new season was being discussed starring a younger cast alongside a handful of original housewives.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle about the show’s potential return, season five cast member Kyla Kirkpatrick, aka ‘The Champagne Dame’, admits she’s unsure whether she’d rejoin the cast.

“I don’t know, it all depends on how busy I am and what's going on,” she shares. “Housewives came at a time when Covid was around so I wasn't doing my European travel.

“I'm sort of having a bit of a career renaissance at the moment. I'm getting a lot of requests to present in other countries and a lot of stuff with Formula One and a lot more hosting and emceeing, so it all depends on how much time I've got.”

Kyla, who famously clashed with her co-star Janet Roach throughout filming, adds that her return would be dependent on who else is in the cast.

“I think I've pretty much made peace with everybody bar one,” she remarks, adding that there's a difference between being “antagonistic for entertainment’s sake” and just being nasty.

“Honestly I'm still in touch with pretty much everybody except for Janet. Gamble [Breaux] and I chat, Simone [Elliott] and I chat. Anj [Rao], Cherry [Dipietrantonio] and I chat every day, we're still really close. And even Gina [Liano] and Chyka [Keebaugh] and Venus [Behbahani-Clark], former castmates, we all still speak.”

Three years after filming RHOM, Kyla confesses that she has mixed feelings about the reality show. While she has no regrets, she describes the experience as “very stressful” and “a weird moment in time”.

“You think that it's all just for the cameras, but actually most of the infighting amongst the girls is 100 per cent genuine. You've got some very strong characters on there,” she details.

“I love women, I have an all-female team, I’ve got plenty of girlfriends, most of my clients are women, most of my role models are women, and so to come in and then fight with another woman is just something that doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. Yet other women feel that they have the right to either comment on your career or tear your personal life apart. So it's quite a strange thing to do, certainly against my ethos in life.

She continues: “It was an interesting time and it feels like forever ago but I'm amazed at how many people around the world really enjoy watching it. I don't think you can ever rule out Real Housewives of Melbourne coming back.”

Outside of reality TV, Kyla says she has two “major” projects in the works that she’s looking forward to sharing with the world.

“One is a documentary on the history of champagne that I'm writing at the moment which I was just talking to Matt Damon about which is huge,” she remarks. “It really delves into the fascinating stories of Cristal and the fall-out with Jay-Z, the rappers, the Russian tsars, links to royalty, what did Madame Clicquot’s husband really die of? All these fabulous stories.

“And then we're looking to move into retail concept bars around the world. So having champagne stores with little tasting rooms and so on around the world.”

The Champagne Dame will also be hosting a champagne masterclass at Melbourne's Good Food & Wine Show this weekend, 31 May – 2 June, where she will offer her tips and tricks to fellow champagne lovers.

“With champagne getting more and more expensive, the masterclass is really accessible. For $89 a ticket, which gives you access to the show, we do a full journey into the world of champagne,” she explains.

“So four glasses of champagne, a tutorial by me, talk a little bit about the history, the nuances, the particularities of champagne, and it's a good fun festival. There are lots of characters to see on stage and lots of things to eat and drink. It’s a good, friendly fun day of activity.”
