The Danish Queen, 53, canceled multiple royal engagements this week after falling ill. She called off a planned event for her Mary Foundation at the University of Copenhagen on March 14, just two days after she also had to withdraw from the Heart Association's annual awards ceremony at the Hotel d'Angleterre in Copenhagen on March 12.
The palace has not shared any details of the royal's illness, however, in a statement to the Danish publication BT, the royals’ Communications Department said: "Her Majesty the Queen, like many others right now, has become ill, and therefore, unfortunately, cannot participate in the Heart Association's award ceremony."
Despite missing out, Queen Mary received a sweet “Get Well Soon” card and flowers from twins Alma and Ellen, whom she was set to meet at the Heart Association awards.
“Thank you for the thoughtfulness. What a lovely surprise to receive this bouquet and drawings, even though illness prevented me from participating in the Heart Association's event,” the Queen shared on Instagram, alongside a photo of the bouquet and handmade card.
“I was looking forward to presenting the Heart Award with Alma and Ellen and meeting some of the young people living with heart disease," she added. "Hopefully we can meet another time.”
Queen Mary and her husband, King Frederik — who acceded to the throne in January 2024, following the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe — have a busy royal schedule ahead of them this year, including two royal summer tours.
From June 11 to 13, the couple will take their first tour of the Faroe Islands, visiting Tórshavn, Vágur, Fámjin, Tvøroyri and Eiði. They were meant to make this trip in 2024, but it was postponed a year due to ongoing strikes.
The King and Queen will then take a late summer cruise on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog from August 25-28, visiting Danish municipalities including Frederikshavn, Thisted, Læsø and Samsø.
