Prince William Discusses ‘Brutal’ Months That Followed Wife and Father’s Cancer Diagnoses

This has been a “dreadful” year for Prince William and his family due in large part to the cancer diagnoses that his wife, Kate Middleton, and father, King Charles III, both received near the start of 2024.

The Prince of Wales reflected on the dual diagnoses during a recent interview in Cape Town, South Africa, where he attended this year’s Earthshot Prize Awards. The prince launched the annual competition as a way “to search for and scale the most innovative solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges” back in 2020, according to the Earthshot Prize website.

“Honestly? It's been dreadful,” William, 42, said when asked about the difficulties of the last year, according to Sky News. “It's probably been the hardest year in my life,” he continued, adding that he found it “really difficult” to “get through everything else and keep everything on track.”

The prince noted that he feels “so proud” of how the king and princess have each tackled their personal health challenges. “But from a personal family point of view, it's been, yeah, it's been brutal."

While William has offered occasional updates on his wife’s health over the course of her cancer battle, he has widely refrained from commenting on the emotional impact that her diagnosis and his father’s have had on him and his family. He told reporters in the latest update earlier this week that Kate is “doing really well” after completing her chemotherapy treatment in September.

The Princess of Wales, who shares three children with William, shared her diagnosis in a March 22 video message, just a few weeks after Buckingham Palace announced the 75-year-old monarch’s battle with cancer. Neither member of the royal family revealed what kind of cancer they were each diagnosed with. Both royals said they began chemotherapy treatment shortly after receiving their diagnoses.
