As the star of Emilia Pérez, Karla made history as the first openly trans actor to be nominated for Best Actress at the awards. Indeed, she has spoken numerous times — including onstage at the Golden Globes — about the importance of trans rights.

Now, as journalist Sarah Hagi noted on X, Karla appears to still have a number of anti-Islam posts on the social media site from the past decade. In one 2016 post, she called the religion "a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured."

In another from 2020, she accused the attacks in Nice of having been perpetrated by "one of these r**arded followers of Allah" and said that "we have to expel these madmen from Europe." She included a caricature of an Arab man pointing at a paintbrush, surrounded by decapitated heads, crying, "Mama he hurt my feelings." That same year, she called the religion "disgusting" in a post with a woman wearing a burka.

In 2021, she said that "the West should ban Islam." In 2023, she responded to an anti-LGBTQ+ post by writing, "Put on a burka."

A source close to the Academy told BuzzFeed that Karla's posts on X do not constitute a violation of their campaign rules as they do not involve another film or nominee.
