“I’m Begging And Begging”: Kristin Davis Just Revealed That She Had “Nightmares” When “Sex And The City’s” Costume Designer Forced Her To Wear Fur
Kristin Davis has revealed that she begged Sex and the City’s costume designer not to make her wear fur during her time on the HBO series — and said that she had “nightmares” when she was forced to try on a chinchilla wrap.
For reference, Kristin, now 59, was 33 years old when she was cast as Charlotte York in the show, which premiered in 1998 and ran until 2004.
And, as you probably know, one of the things that Sex and the City is renowned for is the fashion, with the four protagonists often looking pretty sensational in iconic vintage and designer looks.
This includes Carrie Bradshaw’s infamous brown fur coat, which she wore throughout the original series as well as in SATC’s recent sequel series, And Just Like That….
And Kristin reflected on this controversial look in Monday’s episode of her new podcast, Are You a Charlotte?, which launched earlier this month.
Speaking on the pod, the star revealed that Sex and the City’s costume designer, Patricia Field, “really loved fur,” which led to the show being criticized by PETA at the time.
Reflecting on Carrie’s fur coat, Kristin said: “I hope I’m allowed to say this, I’m really sorry if I’m not, but we eventually did get in a lot of trouble with PETA about it.”
Kristin, who regularly uses her fame to platform animal rights causes, went on to add: “I don’t really like to wear fur. I think I’m OK to say this as well, Pat, back in the day, really, really, really loved fur.”
“Every year, what would happen with us scheduling-wise, is that we’d come back to work in roughly February to start filming,” Kristin went on. “The show would come on HBO in June and then play through the summer, so we had to pretend in February it was summer weather, but obviously it really, really was not.”
“So Pat would always think: ‘Wouldn’t it be great to put them in some fun fur coats,'” she added. “But every year, every year at the beginning, she would try to get me into a fur coat. And every year I’d beg her: ‘Please, Pat, no. Please, Pat, no. Please, please, no, please, no — anything, anything but that.’”
“But she’d be like: ‘All of you are going to be in furs, it’s going to be great,'” Kristin said.
Kristin then recalled a specific incident where she went to a store with Pat to find clothes for Charlotte, and Pat immediately led her to a fur section.
“She puts this chinchilla wrap cape on me, and she’s like: ‘It’s fabulous,’” Kristin shared. “And I’m like: ‘Oh, god help me.’ I go home, and I literally have nightmares that the chinchillas have come alive and that they’re crawling all over me.”
“So I go to work the next day, and I’m like: ‘Please Pat, I can’t sleep thinking about those chinchillas. Please, please,’” Kristin continued. “I’m begging and begging.”
In the end, Kristin revealed that she and Pat ended up compromising on Charlotte wearing shearling instead of fur, referencing a specific pink shearling jacket that she wore once and fans went wild for.
“That was Pat’s compromise,” she concluded. “I didn’t have to wear mink or chinchilla.”
And this wasn’t the only Sex and the City fashion tidbit that Kristin shared on this week’s podcast, with the star also revealing that her feet were left so swollen from shooting in high heels all week that she had a special pair of comfortable shoes one size too big that she’d wear on weekends.
“On the weekend, I had a pair of shoes that were a whole size too big because my feet would be so swollen because I wasn't used to wearing these shoes,” she explained. “So I would have a certain pair of shoes that I’d wear all weekend that my feet could just be swollen in.”
“Then hopefully, by the end of the weekend — the short weekend — they’d be back ready at 5 a.m. on Monday to be putting those Manolos [Blahniks] back on,” Kristin shared.
