'Alien' suspect Nikki Webster breaks silence on Masked Singer appearance

Nikki Webster, 32, has spoken out over speculation she is one of the celebrities going incognito on The Masked Singer Australia.

A prime suspect for the lady behind the Alien, the former child star told The Daily Telegraph that it all ‘depends’.

Is Nikki the Alien?

“I have seen a bit of talk and a lot of kids at the studio. Would I do a reality show like that? I don’t know. I guess it depends … right time, right place, it just depends,” she told the newspaper.

Nikki is a household name after performing the main act at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and releasing her debut single “Strawberry Kisses” the following year.

She left the spotlight to open a chain of dance studios and is now a mum to two kids, but fans are convinced she’s hitting the stage undercover as the Alien on the new show.

Decoding the Alien clues

The Masked Singer Australia is ‘a singing competition with a difference’ and features 12 unidentified celebrities who perform in full costume.

As part of the intrigue, the characters drop clues about themselves before their performances, and Aliens breadcrumbs all seem to lead to the Aussie icon.

“People think I appeared out of nowhere but I trained for years to achieve my dreams. As aliens should I arrived in a stunning flash of lights and sound,” the Alien told audiences in a modified voice masking their true identity.

“It felt like the world’s eyes were on me, and for a time I truly loved the attention.”

Fans of the show are convinced the clues point to Nikki’s Olympics performance, which was watched all over the globe.

Just 12 years old when she performed, the star was an overnight success story but later retreated from the spotlight, with the exception of a few appearances on breakfast television, and a stint on Dancing with the Stars in 2005.

“I am so flattered,” she told the paper of the speculation that she is the person beneath the costume.

Along with Nikki, Masked Singer judges Dannii, Lindsay, Jackie O and Hughesy suspect the Alien could be eco-warrior Bindi Irwin, singer Samantha Jade or AC/DC rocker Angus Young.

Nikki’s 2019 comeback

Masked Singer appearance or not, Nikki seems to be having somewhat of a renaissance in 2019.

In celebration of One-Hit Wonder Day on Wednesday, Nikki has teamed up with food delivery service Deliveroo to release her first-ever dessert, a strawberry and chocolate creation called, of course, “Strawberry Kisses”.

The sweet treat costs just $1 and is available from chocolate restaurant Max Brenner, exclusively via the Deliveroo app.

“I’ve definitely been missing strawberry kisses since 2001, and I can’t wait to bring it back this week with a tasty treat (that will be just as sweet),” she said in a statement.

Back in January, Nikki released her first sone in 18 years, “Move Your Body,” which encourages people to be active in their own way every day.

She’s also been seen out and about attending events such as The Iconic Kids First Birthday Party in August.

What is The Masked Singer Australia about?

The Masked Singer Australia is based on a reality TV show that originated in South Korea.

It’s marketed as ‘a singing competition with a difference’ and features 12 unidentified celebrities who perform in full costume then ‘unmask’ themselves to the judges, live studio audience and viewers at home afterwards.

Each episode, six contestants pair up to compete against one another in a ‘face-off’ where they perform a song of their choice in their real voice.

After each ‘face-off’ the studio audience and judges vote for their favourite celeb the keep ‘safe’ for the week - the ‘loser’ is at risk of being unmasked and sent home unless the judges chose to ‘save’ them.

Gretel Killeen, aka the Octopus, was the first celeb to be unmasked in the premiere on Monday night.

Cricketing great Brett Lee was unmasked in episode two, after performing as the Parrot.

There are still have 10 unknown singers to go, including a unicorn, lion, monster, spider and a wolf.

Just one day after the show premiered, social media was whipped into a frenzy when the identity of the Wolf was supposedly revealed on Twitter.

Channel 10 has released several clues - one singer is an ARIA Award winner, while another is a World Cup winner, and yet another a Hall of Famer - with more hints to roll out throughout the season.

The Masked Singer airs 7.30 Monday and Tuesday on Channel 10.
