According to Harris' newsletter, while 4-year-old Ella was staying with this close friend, a freak accident occurred, and the golden retriever died. After finding the dog dead, the family friend called Harris and told him they "found her in the front yard, lying in the grass. It seems like a tree branch had somehow gotten caught in her collar, and in trying to get it free, she rolled around on the ground, and it wrapped around her neck."
Harris added in his Wondercade newsletter that he decided to post Ella's death announcement in the newsletter over social media because he had "no interest in processing the hateful, uninformed, yet inevitable comments that would ensue."
