Mums are superheroes; I've only been one for a little over a year and I already feel like I've well earnt my cape thanks to the sheer number of hours I've put into the job. And that's only caring for one (thankfully healthy) child, for one year, in a two-parent household.
Mother's Day 2021 is fast approaching and it's time to start celebrating the supermums in our lives. Here, we've collected a list of thoughtful gift ideas specifically for new mums to help them feel as appreciated and pampered as they deserve to be on their very first Mother's Day.
Sleep-related gifts
While it’s unfortunately not possible to give the gift of a good night’s sleep - I would know, my bubba wakes six times a night and refuses to be settled by anyone but me - here are some lovely presents that can help promote a little more shut eye.
Bose sleepbuds: $380, currently on sale for $322
For breastfeeding mummas, having a sleepover away from bub isn’t always an option, as much as a break would be heavenly.
However, these sleepbuds make it possible for someone else to take over baby duty overnight without disturbing mum unless it’s time for a feed. They stay in your ears all night long and lull you to sleep with soothing sounds just like bubba's white noise machine.
Sleeping beauty bundle: $68
This trio of products from The Base Collective is made with lavender and magnesium to promote relaxation before bedtime and comes with a bonus silk eye mask.
They’re safe to use while breastfeeding but do contain lavender oil which some mums prefer to avoid while pregnant.
Breastfeeding-friendly PJs: $90
Loungewear and PJs are a new mum’s uniform, and she needs to have enough sets to cater for the inevitable spit ups, poo explosions and the like.
This 100% cotton set from Atmos&here is baggy enough to be comfortable postpartum, and it has a button-down top which makes it breastfeeding friendly.
Slippers: $49
Keep her feet cozy now that the cooler months are upon us with some stylish fluffy slippers. These slides are perfect for autumn before she's ready to pull out the full-blown UGGs.
Silk pillowcase and eye mask: $132
Add a little luxury to her bedtime routine with a silk pillowcase like this Slip one made of Mulberry silk and designed to reduce split ends.
They're also supposed to be great for antiageing which we all know is a godsend considering how much you age in the first three months after bringing a baby home.
Gifts for outdoor fun
Getting outdoors and enjoying the parklands, beaches, playgrounds and gardens our beautiful country has to offer is not only stimulating for bub, but great for mum’s mental health too.
Here are some gift ideas for the perfect mum picnic.
Picnic rug and play mat: $119
Pretend you’re having high tea with this machine washable picnic rug that doubles as a baby play mat by Aussie brand Glorious Difference.
Set of four organiser bags: $50
These transparent cases from Prene are perfect for keeping little fingers from pulling every single item out of her nappy bag, plus she’ll always know what’s inside without having to rifle through them.
Sonos move speakers: $649
Keep the beats coming wherever she is with this portable Bluetooth speaker.
It’s weather and shock resistant so won’t be a problem when little toddlers knock it over or spill their water on it, and it’s got up to 11 hours of battery life so Baby Shark can stay on loop.

Niggling knots are hard to avoid between picking bubba up all day long and less-than-perfect breastfeeding posture, which is where a massage gun comes in handy.
