Missy Higgins has stunned fans with the news she and her husband of six years Dan Lee split up earlier this year. The singer-songwriter, 38, took to Instagram to announce that she and Dan are now co-parenting their two children.

"Six months ago Dan and I separated. I became a single parent. Something I never thought would happen and something I’m still trying to grapple with, to be honest," she wrote. "The shame of a 'failed marriage', a 'broken family', all the things I swore I would never let happen, happened.

"I was so determined for this not to be my story. We tried many ways to keep the story alive, keep things together, keep on searching down new avenues of hope, or hope-covered denial as it may have been. But then life happens, doesn’t it. And once again I’m on my knees and utterly humbled by my inability to control it."

Missy continued, saying, "I’m still grieving. I realised this today as I was walking through the bush crying like a lunatic in the rain. Grieving the way I thought things would turn out. Grieving the never-ending story-book love story I will never have, the unattainable one that’s fed to me every time I turn on the TV."

She added, however, that Dan is still her "best friend" and they have "love and respect" for each other.

"Ultimately we decided that in order to be the best parents we can be, we have to live apart. Sometimes things just don’t work in the conventional way," she wrote. "I’m telling you this because, well, I share my life stuff and this feels pretty big.

"I also thought it would be helpful if you’re going through the same thing. If you are and you feel anything like I do, you probably feel like you failed at life. You’re questioning everything up until this point: your childhood, your parents, your ideals, your life choices, what the future will hold now that the fairytale is in cinders on the floor."

She finished by saying addressing anyone going through a similar situation, saying, "You’re not alone. You’re not broken, you’re just human. We’re all just making it up as we go. Sending love to you all out there."

Missy and Dan share two children, Samuel, eight, and Luna, five.

Mia Freedman commented with a number of heart emojis, while singer Gretta Ray added, "Sending you so much love Missy".

TV journalist Narelda Jacobs also commented, "These words will be a comfort to many. Sending you all the love back!!"

Singer Ben Lee added, "Love you Missy."

One follower added, "It's a journey and a half but there's always light and sharing shares the load and creates a new normal. Power to you Missy. You're definitely not alone."

"I’ve been there, I’m so sorry to hear you are too Missy. It’s a tough shitty road but a brave one and one you will get through. Wishing you every happiness when the time is right," another wrote.

"Beautifully written," a third said. "Thanks for sharing Missy."

"Sending love and strength your way. Nobody can ever understand this kind of heartbreak, hurt or feeling of failure until you’ve lived it 💔 and I wish it on nobody," somebody else wrote.
