Where was Miss Austen filmed? BBC

250 years after her birth, the stories of Jane Austen just keep coming. And the latest dramatisation of the English writer's life to take to the screen is Miss Austen, a four-part BBC drama exploring why Jane's older sister Cassandra destroyed the majority of Jane's letters after her death.

The new series is based on Gill Hornby's novel of the same name and follows two timelines. The first is set in the 'present' and sees an older Cassandra visit her old friends in Kintbury, where she reflects on the past and decides what to do with beloved sister's correspondence. The second timeline is set in the 'past' and follows a younger Jane and Cassandra as they navigate love, heartache and family.

As with all TV dramas set in the regency period, you can expect to see a lot of stunning homes, and the good news? Many of the filming locations are able to visit in real life and here's what you need to know about them.

Kintbury House - Adwell House, Oxfordshire

Many of the events of the series in both the past and present timelines take place in the vicarage at Kintbury.

The real village of Kintbury is based in Berkshire and the original house where Cassandra had stayed was taken down and rebuilt in the 1860s, according to Miss Austen writer Gill Hornby.

And so filming for the scenes at Kintbury House took place at Adwell House in Oxfordshire. Located in the town of Thame, just 40 miles from London, Adwell House was remodelled in the early 1700s by William Newell.

Today you're able to visit the estate in a number of capacities. The estate is open for fishing, weddings and hosts a number of events throughout the year. Filming also regularly takes place at the estate, and has been used for series such as Midsomer Murders.

Steventon - Shottesbrooke House, Berkshire

Steventon Vicarage is the home of the Austens based near Basingstoke and is seen throughout the series. In real life Jane Austen's nephew tore down the house and rebuilt the rectory and the new house is now a private family home.

For filming of Miss Austen, the BBC used Shottesbrooke House in Berkshire to create Steventon. Shottesbrooke House was built in the 16th century, and is now privately owned. It's the one place on this list you can't actually visit.

Sidmouth - Rye and Camber Sands

During the 'past' timeline we get to see the Austen family travel to Devon, more specifically the village of Sidmouth, after being invited by vicar Richard Buller.

The filming for these Devon scenes were actually done in Rye and Camber Sands in East Sussex.

Synnøve Karlsen who plays young Cassandra in the series, touched on filming by the sea during an interview with Country & Townhouse and revealed it was much colder filming than it appeared on screen.

"It was absolutely freezing!" Synnøve told the publication. "I think on one of the days we were filming it was around -5°C, and we were trying to look as comfortable as we could sitting on the beach having a 'summer' picnic."

Phyllis Logan who plays Mrs Austen, added: "We used some of the cobbled streets, which were very hard to walk on in the shoes my character wore!"

The town of Rye is just over two hours away in the car from London or a train will take you just over an hour.
