Milo Ventimiglia Visits Site of Family’s Burned-Down Malibu Home, Says This Is Us Parallel Is ‘Not Lost on Me’

As This Is Us‘ Jack Pearson, Milo Ventimiglia famously lost a family home to a fire. Art in some ways imitated life for the actor this week, he acknowledges, when he and wife Jarah Mariano lost their Malibu home to the fast-moving wildfires ravaging the coast in Los Angeles.

In the CBS News segment above, Ventimiglia says that he and his wife evacuated their home on Tuesday, and were left to watch on the home security cameras “as flames took over” and turned their house to ash.

“There is a shock moment where you go, ‘This is real and this is happening,’ and then at a certain point you turn [the camera feed] off,” Ventimiglia says. “What good is it to keep watching? We kind of accepted the loss.”

Ventimiglia and Mariano — who is pregnant and expecting the couple’s first child “any day now” — grabbed as much as they could before evacuating on Tuesday, but their baby-to-be’s crib and other nursery furnishings were of course lost to the fire.

Noting the parallels to the This Is Us fire that razed the Pearson home, Ventimiglia says, “It’s not lost on me, life imitating art” — though his real home was the victim of wildfire, and not a slow cooker. Plus, he himself evacuated unscathed, where as Jack… well.

Looking to the present and immediate future, Ventimiglia says, “We’ve got good friends and we’ve got good people we’re working with, and we’ll make do. We’ll make do.

After all, “Wife and baby and dog, most important.”

Meanwhile, the Altadena, Calif. home of Ventimiglia’s This Is Us wife, Mandy Moore, is “mostly intact but not livable” after she and her family (Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith, and their three children) evacuated on Tuesday evening.
