Former Bachelor Matty J has opened up about a cosmetic procedure he underwent when he was 20, after battling a longstanding insecurity.

The Aussie star appeared on Mamamia's But Are You Happy? podcast and opened up about a childhood moment that led to him undertaking a surgical procedure later in life.

"I think it might have been grade four or grade five, and there was this girl who tapped me on the shoulder at assembly. She goes, 'You've got really big ears," the former Bachie said, saying that the comment upset him so much that he went to the bathroom and cried.

The taunt stuck with him, and he got an Otoplasty (cosmetic ear surgery) done not long after high school.

Reflecting back on it, Matty said if it was now he could laugh at it.

"It was something as a kid that just kind of stuck with me," he said. "I guess it was just always something that I wanted to kind of rectify.

"I think now I could laugh about it," he said. "As a 20-year-old I was nowhere near as robust as I am now."

Matty J previously spoke about the procedure back in 2019 when he was hosting radio show Weekend Breakfast with Matt, Sarah, and Matty J.

"I have to confess I've been surgically enhanced. I'm not going to lie to you," he said at the time. "As a kid, I was given the name Dumbo. That's what drove me to get my ears fixed."
