Matthew Lawrence Remembers ‘One-of-a-Kind Human’ Robin Williams and His ‘Compassion’ on the “Mrs. Doubtfire” Set
The actor shared memories of the late star during 90s Con 2024 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Thirty-one years after Mrs. Doubtfire’s release, Matthew Lawrence still has fond memories of his time on set, particularly with star Robin Williams.
“Getting to work with Robin Williams and Sally Field, I almost didn’t realize it at the time when I was there, but it has carried over in my entire life,” he shared on Sept. 13 during a panel with his brothers Joey and Andrew at 90s Con in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Calling his late costar a “one-of-a-kind human being,” Lawrence reflected on how Williams “could do both: he could make you cry and he could make you laugh equally.”
But it was his actions when the cameras stopped rolling that really left an impact on the young star, who was 13 when the film debuted.

“You hear all these stories about celebrities — they don’t want the crew to talk to them or look them in the eye,” he continued. “But Robin was just the opposite. He knew everybody’s name, he was compassionate about everybody and he really understood the meaning of, ‘You have to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.’ There was no hierarchy for him: the guy running the craft services table was just as important as the director.”
“Seeing that at such a young age, that when you are at the top of your game you treat people really well — you emulate that,” Lawrence continued.
Williams died in 2014 at the age of 63.
Mrs. Doubtfire told the story of Daniel Hillard (Williams), a dad of three who is struggling in his marriage to Miranda (Field). When Miranda asks for a divorce, Daniel ultimately becomes “Mrs. Doubtfire,” disguising himself as a nanny and housekeeper whom Miranda hires to watch the kids, played by Lisa Jakub, Mara Wilson and Lawrence.
