MAFS’ Katie Johnston appears downcast as fresh heartbreak revealed: 'Derailed me'

The strain of her tumultuous appearance on MAFS appears to be taking its toll on Katie Johnston following her split from ‘husband’ Tim Gromie during the season’s first commitment ceremony. Ahead of their final scenes airing on Sunday night, the 37-year-old was pictured looking downcast while walking her dog near her home on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

The lonely outing, where Katie was seen climbing across rocks at the beach and looking sad while scrolling on her phone, came after Nine publicly shared her audition tape online and which revealed even more heartbreak for the star. In the audition tape, a smiling Katie is seen revealing her heartbreak after her last boyfriend broke up with her by explaining he was moving back home to Colombia – only for the star to later discover he had remained in Australia.

"It derailed me so much," she began. "[The relationship] was kind of going downhill anyway. Then I checked in with him a couple of months later and he said, 'Now is probably a good time to tell you I'm seeing someone and I'm staying in Australia'.

"Now he’s married to her with two kids," Katie recalled.

The MAFS bride began to cry as she explained she was "beyond" heartbroken by his update, which has led to her struggling to get close to someone ever since.

"It's not something I let myself dream of," she said when asked if she sees herself starting a family and having children. "Because I've been single for so long, and I don't see any hope in sight for me in that department. So, I just block out that dream, but it would be so beautiful."

Katie may not have found love with Tim on the show, with the mismatched pair both choosing to leave the experiment on Sunday night after he declined to move into the Skye Suites with Katie and an explosive dinner party in which his co-stars lambasted him for how he treated his bride.

Yahoo Lifestyle can reveal that 37-year-old Katie has spent six months since filming wrapped creating a free online course to help other women recognise toxic traits in themselves and potential partners. The course is also designed to give them tools on how to build their self-esteem and confidence.

"Most people have no idea that Katie has a degree in behavioural science and a major in psychology, and she’s very passionate about using everything she’s been through and learned about herself to help other women," a source connected to the reality show said.

Meanwhile, last week, Yahoo Lifestyle also revealed how since filming wrapped last year, the reality star has spent time working on herself and learning to love who she is. She now has a brand new lease on life, and Tim’s rejection is said to have been "the catalyst that pushed her to address her issues and learn where they come from".

"I've gone on such a journey in my life. It’s taken me a long time to feel really good in my own skin, and I feel like this is just a good reinforcement of that," she gushed in a video on-set of a photoshoot at Studio Republic, which the studio shared with Yahoo Lifestyle.

Unfortunately, the newly confident star is yet to find love but is still said to "be open to finding her perfect match" but for now is "focusing on herself".
