Longtime Partners Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater Hit the Stage Together in Henrik Ibsen’s “Ghosts” Off-Broadway
The star-studded production will also count Billy Crudup, Ella Beatty and Levon Hawke among its cast
Lovebirds Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater are sharing the stage once again in the new year!
The pair of actors, who have three children together, are set to star in Lincoln Center Theater's revival of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play Ghosts, a drama about a family confronting the dark secrets that are embedded in their past and present.
Joining them in the star-studded production are Billy Crudup, Ella Beatty and Levon Hawke.
Directed by Mark O’Rowe, previews begin Thursday, Feb. 13 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. Opening is officially set for March 10.
Rabe, 42, will portray mother Helena Alving, and Linklater, 48, will act as Engstrand — a carpenter hired by Helena to construct an orphanage to commemorate her late husband. The show follows Helena’s son Oswald’s (Hawke) return home and the terrifying secret he brings with him.

Both Rabe and Linklater have extensive stage credits, and have threaded the boards together in the past.
They first met in 2010 when they were cast opposite Al Pacino in the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of The Merchant of Venice. Though Rabe stayed with the revival when it transferred to Broadway, Linklater didn't. But their first Broadway co-credit came the following year, when they starred in Theresa Rebeck’s contemporary comedy Seminar in 2011.
Other productions — including Much Ado About Nothing and Cymbeline, both at the Delacorte — have since followed, as have on-screen collaborations.

In April 2024, the couple made their co-directorial debut, in the film adaptation of Chuck Klosterman's novel, Downtown Owl. The comedy-drama starred Rabe opposite Vanessa Hudgens, and followed the lives of residents in the fictional town of Owl, North Dakota during a whiteout blizzard.
Linklater, of The New Adventures of Old Christine fame, and Rabe, of American Horror Story fame, welcomed their first daughter in 2017 — and two more babies in 2020 and 2022.
Speaking to PEOPLE at Chanel’s 16th Annual Tribeca Artists Dinner in June 2023, Rabe said that her children allow her to stay grounded after finishing an acting role. “Listen, my kids always help me kind of come back to the present moment,” she said, noting that the 2023 series Love & Death was particularly hard to “shake.” “So when in doubt, that’s what I go to.”

In addition to Rabe and Linklater’s romance, the Ghosts cast includes two others on a similar path, as both Hawke and Beatty come from famous families.
Levon, 22, is the son of actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, and is the sibling of Stranger Things star Maya. The young performer recently acted in the Zoë Kravitz-directed Blink Twice, in addition to his role in the Apple TV+ drama anthology The Crowded Room alongside Tom Holland and Emmy Rossum.
Ella, 24, also has A-list parents: Annette Bening and Warren Beatty. The Feud: Capote vs. The Swans actress made her Broadway debut in the Sarah Paulson-led Appropriate last year.
Tickets for Ghosts go on sale Jan 17 at 12 p.m. ET.
