Yahoo Lifestyle 'Landman' Star Billy Bob Thornton Makes Rare Appearance With His Wife Connie
“I always get freaked out when people call me in the middle of the night,” Billy Bob Thornton said last month. “I think somebody got hurt. You know how nobody talks to a pitcher who has a no-hitter going on? All the people who work with me treat me like that — they don’t ever tell me when this stuff is going on. So I had no idea. And I was relieved to find out that everyone was okay and very honored that the Golden Globe folks would think of me again.”
The call from his publicist at 5 a.m. was to tell him he was nominated for his seventh Globe Globe award, for his performance as Tommy Norris in Taylor Sheridan’s newest drama, Landman. Sheridan wrote the role of Tommy specifically for Thornton. “I went to the [1883] premiere in Las Vegas, and after that we had a dinner and Taylor sat next to me and he said, ‘Listen, I’ve got a thing I’m going to write around you. It’s called Landman, it takes place in the oil business, and I’m going to write it in your voice because I think I’ve known you long enough now to write in your voice,'” he recalled. “And when I read the first script I was like, ‘Wow, you did, didn’t you?’ Because I read it and was like, ‘Yeah, that’s kind of me if I were a landman.’ So, it was pretty awesome.”
Thornton has won Globes twice previously; in 2017 for Best Actor in a Television Series (Drama) for his role in Goliath, and in 2015, for Best Actor in a Limited Series for his role in Fargo. Tonight, he was up for a third trophy (though he lost to Shogun's Hiroyuki Sanada), and he was joined for the occasion by his wife, Connie Angland. The two tied the knot in 2014.
Last night, he attended the Paramount Golden Globe Nominee Celebration at Cipriani Beverly Hills.
Landman is currently airing on Paramount+; the finale is set to drop next weekend. It hasn't been renewed for a season two yet, but it's looking promising.
