Delta Goodrem spills on potentially representing Australia at Eurovision

EXCLUSIVE: Delta opens up about her love for the Eurovision Song Contest and whether she'd ever compete.

From Guy Sebastian and Dami Im to Jessica Mauboy and Kate Miller-Heidke, there have been many iconic Aussie musicians who have represented Australia on the global stage at the Eurovision Song Contest over the past decade.

One beloved singer-songwriter who is yet to put her hand up for the gig, however, is Delta Goodrem, who recently returned from Europe where she performed a string of sold-out shows.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle shortly after Australia’s participation in the 2024 contest was confirmed, Delta admits that she’s a big fan of Eurovision but it’s not something she’s ever considered being a part of.

“I’ve always loved watching Eurovision, it’s such a great moment in time,” she shares. “Wherever I've been in certain moments of time just hasn't crossed paths with that in whatever cycle of music I was in.

“I've always been just running in my own race and whatever I’m meant to sort of cross paths with I’ll move towards that if a time feels right, but not currently. But I always love cheering on everybody because the music is always so great. I mean look what Måneskin did, it’s amazing.”

Australia’s participation in Eurovision began in 2015 and was confirmed by the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and SBS to continue until 2023.

Within that time, Australia's representatives have been Guy Sebastian, Dami Im, Isaiah Firebrace, Jessica Mauboy, Kate Miller-Heidke, Montaigne, Sheldon Riley and most recently, Voyager.

Earlier this month it was announced that Australia would be participating in the 2024 contest in Sweden, with the musical act yet to be revealed.

Delta's return to acting

After touring Australia and Europe, getting engaged, and filming the fourth edition of Christmas With Delta, which airs this Sunday at 7pm on Channel Nine, Delta shares that 2023 has been one of the busiest years of her life.

This year also marked Delta’s long-awaited return to acting in the Netflix film Love Is in the Air, which she describes as a career highlight.

“When we were on tour I woke up and I was like, ‘Is it doing okay?’, and I looked on Netflix and I saw it was number two and I was like, ‘Oh that's great!’,” she tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

“And then I spoke to the director [Adrian Powers] and he was like, ‘No no, it's number one in the world’. And I was like, ‘What? Pardon?’. It was such a great moment. I had just come offstage in Melbourne and I was speaking to Adrian and I was like, ‘That's amazing’. I was so happy.”

Having launched her career on Neighbours, Delta says that acting will always hold a special place in her heart.

“It's all art, it's all an expression of storytelling, and when you have that in your heart, it's a flame that you love,” she remarks. “It’s always been a love. I love both very much, and so it’s great that I get to do both at the one time.”

Christmas with Delta airs Sunday December 17 at 7pm on Channel Nine and 9Now.
