Wicked was one of this year’s biggest films, producing drama both on and off the big screen. With a larger-than-life press tour and all eyes on the superstar cast (including Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo), it’s no surprise the musical movie adaptation was nominated for plenty of awards at the 2025 Golden Globes. But as the stars of the movie walked the red carpet on Sunday at the Beverly Hilton, there was one face notably missing: Ethan Slater.
The Tony Award–nominated actor, who plays Boq, a Munchkinlander man in love with Grande’s character, Glinda, skipped out on this year’s award ceremony, despite Wicked’s slew of nominations. His girlfriend, Ariana, was nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture. (And she looked beautiful in a strapless gold gown and white opera gloves.)
Since the start of their relationship in 2023, Ariana and Ethan have been making headlines—which might be why he decided to step back tonight. The two both split from their respective spouses, Dalton Gomez and Lilly Jay, about six months after Wicked started filming. Ariana and Ethan were each met with backlash as Lilly (who welcomed her and Ethan’s first child in August of 2023) opened up about the whole affair.
Amid Wicked’s recent release, Lilly wrote a candid essay for The Cut, detailing what it felt like to lose her partner and her anonymity, all to be met with constant promotion for a film that reminds her of the worst time in her life. Perhaps Ethan thought it best to leave the drama off the red carpet? Whatever the reason, we missed you, Boq!
