Laverne Cox ends tenure as E! red carpet host: 'I'm so incredibly proud'

It's the end of an (E!)ra.

Laverne Cox, who has anchored E!'s red carpet coverage for three years, is stepping down from her post, the star announced via Instagram Thursday. The news comes ahead of Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, a notoriously star-studded event where A-listers have been known to get loose-lipped.

"With an incredible amount of gratitude I've decided not to return as host of #LiveFromE's red carpet coverage. I'm so incredibly proud of the work we did over my three year tenure," the activist and actress wrote in her post.

USA TODAY has reached out to E! and Cox for comment.

A celebrity news staple, Cox brought energy and glamour to the carpet as A-listers themselves sometimes stopped to fangirl over the "Orange is The New Black" star.

Cox's tack leaned into effusiveness rather than "gotcha" moments, creating the sense that she and her interview subjects were just having a gab.

"We had the timE! of our lives ❤️," E! Entertainment's Instagram account commented on the post. It remains to be seen who will fill Cox's shoes. Previous hosts include Giuliana Rancic and Ryan Seacrest.

On Sunday, Globes coverage will be anchored by Access Hollywood's Zuri Hall and comedian Heather McMahan, according to a release from E!

"These moments are a reminder to me of what an incredible privilege it has been to talk to some of the world's greatest artists about their work, navigating the pressures of success, etc." Cox wrote in her farewell message.

A barrier-breaker across the entertainment industry, Cox was the first trans woman to host a major entertainment network's red carpet coverage. She brought that experience into her interviews.

At the 2024 Emmys in September, she told "Baby Reindeer" star Nava Mau, who is also trans, "I'm so proud of you." Wiping away tears, Cox continued: "This show is so incredible and the work that you do is so amazing. Ten years ago, I became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting Emmy, and 10 years later, I'm not the last. You're the fourth (person), and the first in this category."

Cox was nominated four separate times for Emmys for her acting in "Orange is the New Black" and won a Daytime Emmy Award for her work as executive producer on the documentary "Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word."

"I'm so excited to keep growing, evolving and exploring great opportunities as an actress, artist, host and speaker. I hope you'll all continue to go with me on my evolving journey," Cox continued in her farewell on Instagram.

She then encouraged fans to tune into her new comedy series "Clean Slate," which will premiere on Amazon Prime in February.
