“Landman” season finale ends with [SPOILER] flatlining

It's safe to say Tommy Norris has had a pretty rough 24 hours.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Landman's season finale, "The Crumbs of Hope."

So long, Monty…?

Jon Hamm’s cutthroat oil titan appears to have taken his final breath in Landman’s dramatic season finale. After suffering a ruptured aortic aneurysm at the end of episode 9, Monty is rushed into emergency open heart surgery and placed on an oxygen machine while awaiting a heart transplant.

However, it is highly implied that his ticker may have given out before a replacement could be found, as the final shot of Monty sees him flatlining as wife Cami (Demi Moore) and their daughters weep over his hospital bed. But, in all fairness to Monty, he has survived five heart attacks before and no one explicitly stated that he was dead, so a sudden and miraculous recovery is technically still on the table. Don't lose hope, Hamm fans!

With Monty out of commission — at least for the foreseeable future, if not permanently — Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) finds himself promoted to President of M*Tex Oil and the executor of the family’s estate. He is then forced to navigate both helping Cami close one last “farm out” deal for the company and handling the increasingly dangerous situation unfolding with the cartel all at the same time. No pressure!

After enlisting the help of Rebecca (Kayla Wallace) and Nate (Colm Feore) to get the deal in motion, Tommy appears to actually be getting things under control which, naturally, is when he is kidnapped by Jimenez (Alex Meraz) and the cartel. They attempt to intimidate him by blowing up an oil tank as payback for Monty’s stunt with the National Guard, but when Tommy remains his ever-stoic self, they decide to transport him to another location to strike some more… physical fear into him instead.

Jimenez then proceeds to conduct what can only be described as ASMR torture upon Tommy — complete with rattling chains, smooth hammer sounds, gasoline pouring, and the swift clang of a nail into the upper thigh (oww). When Tommy's death seems all but assured, everyone’s favorite landman is saved by a mystery man, played by Andy Garcia, who kills the other cartel members, frees him from his shackles, and floats the idea of a peaceful coexistence between the cartel and M*Tex. It’s not immediately clear, however, if Garcia's character is another member of Jimenez’s cartel or another rival group entirely, setting the stakes for even more future oil-drug drama.

While Tommy initially bristles at the suggestion, it becomes abundantly clear that he might not exactly have a final say in the matter — especially since Garcia reveals that the cartel is interested in getting into the oil business, too. The pair of unlikely temporary allies then escape before the police can arrive, with Tommy hitching a ride home from Dale (James Jordan).

The battered Tommy completes his no good, very bad day by crumpling onto the couch, where he is promptly met by worried wife Angela (Ali Larter), who questions his whereabouts. As she goes off to make breakfast, the rest of the family slowly trickles in, including Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) and her boyfriend Ryder (Mitchell Slaggert), who, much to Tommy’s chagrin, spent the night. He then continues his streak of spotting animals by discovering a baby coyote in his backyard.

Speaking of the family, Angela and Ainsley successfully completed their mission to take the local nursing home to the strip club with some… unique results, thanks to Ainsley volunteering Ryder to grind up on the female residents’ wheelchairs. Ainsley then pays back Ryder for his performance later that evening — while her mom is still very much downstairs clarifying butter, which is… definitely a choice. Lots of choices were made.

And, on the other side of the oil fields, Cooper (Jacob Lofland) continues his own quest to make a name for himself, talking a fellow oilman out of investing in solar power in favor of working with him. He then shares a heartfelt moment with his partner Ariana (Paulina Chávez), who is still in the process of grieving her late husband.

Landman has yet to officially be greenlit for a second season by Paramount+, but its season finale appears to suggest one is on the way based solely on the myriad questions that it's left unanswered. Is Monty really dead? Will Tommy be able to close the deal and say goodbye to M*Tex? Does he even want to? Have the local authorities responded to the massive explosion at the patch? Who is looking out for that sweet baby coyote? It appears we'll just have to wait and see whether the series booms or goes out with a bust.

Landman's season finale is streaming now on Paramount+.
