Landman Finale: Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter Weigh in on Tommy’s New Power Position and Why He’s ‘Scared to Death’ — Watch

This post contains spoilers for Landman‘s Season 1 finale, which began streaming Sunday. Proceed accordingly.

Lest you think that Landman‘s Tommy is about to trade in his dusty blue jeans for a power suit and The Patch Café for three-martini lunches, thanks to his recently acquired role as MTex’s big boss, allow the man behind the landman to set you straight.

“Tommy is never going to get the landman out of him. I mean, that’s who he is,” series star Billy Bob Thornton says in the video above. “He does not want to be an executive guy. I don’t think he wants to be in the suit, but I believe he’ll do whatever it takes. I just think that he’s going to bring along his experience as a landman and run it from that perspective, you know?”

In case you need a little catch-up: The Paramount+ series ended its first season Sunday with an episode that saw the death of Jon Hamm’s Monty, owner of MTex Oil. His will named Tommy his successor, a position he accepted out of respect for his old friend and boss. Though Cami was devastated over her husband’s passing, she ultimately decided that Tommy should continue the big risk/big reward deal that Monty started.

Tommy’s week went from terrible to nearly fatal when Jimenez and his men kidnapped him and tortured him in the basement of a bar. He would’ve died had Jimenez’s boss, Gallino (played by Andy Garcia, Ocean’s Eleven), not intervened. Gallino killed Jimenez and his underlings for going rogue, then set Tommy free with a stated desire to stay out of each other’s way in the future. (Go here for a full recap of the episode, and hear series co-creator Christian Wallace’s thoughts on Cami in a potential Season 2 here.)

So I had a lot to discuss with both Thornton and his on-screen missus, Ali Larter, when we chatted earlier this week. Press PLAY on the video above to hear what they both had to say about the Norris family’s new circumstances and how Thornton loved finally working opposite longtime pal Garcia. Then make sure to stick around until the end of the video to hear Thornton’s heartfelt message to those who’ve lost so much in the Los Angeles fires.
