Kmart shoppers debate popularity of 'fabulous' $3.50 item: 'What’s the point?'
We were today years old when we found out this was a thing - but we're still not sure why it exists.
In the latest news from the retail world - and filed under: We-didn't-know-we needed-it-until-right-now - an unlikely Kmart product is blowing up on social media, thanks to a single glowing review. But, as with all things internet, not everyone is on the same page.
TikToker @mummamuk shared her enthusiasm for the retailer's $3.50 can toppers in a TikTok video, calling them a must-have find from the camping section. The idea is simple: pop the topper onto an opened can, click it into place, and voilà! Your can is now a bottle, complete with a lid to keep the fizz intact for later.

"I LOVE these," she exclaimed, showing how the product transforms a standard can into a resealable bottle.
"Wow, I never even knew these existed! Kmart literally has everything," one user commented, echoing the surprise of many who were just discovering this quirky gadget.
Another chimed in, "Just fabulous," while someone else declared, "They’re so useful, I love them."
Many users shared similar positive experiences. "I introduced these to my boyfriend two months back; he thinks these are a massive game changer," one happy customer noted.
Another added, "They used to sell these years ago but only in clear. Now the coloured ones help identify who owns which can."
Clever convenience or unnecessary gadget?
Despite the praise, not everyone was sold on the idea, and several people who had used the item not pleased with the outcome. A common complaint? The lids popping off unexpectedly.
"Mine was just sitting on my can and went PEW and flew into the air," one user recounted. Another warned, "Never use these; they become a projectile object."
Then there were those questioning the very need for can toppers at all.
"What’s the point? A can is one serve; you’re meant to drink it in one sitting. Just buy a small bottle if you want less!" one commenter argued.
Another added, "Literally solved a non-existent problem."

One user even had a bit of a déjà vu moment with these toppers, and not in a good way. "I used the original versions of these from the US 10+ years ago. They were useless back then and, seeing many comments here, they’re still useless! They’d leak or pop right off from the gas pressure."
Amidst the mixed reviews, @mummamuk, however, stood by her recommendation in a follow up video, saying, "I've not had any issues, no leaks. You have to place the lids firmly. Yes, it stays fizzy."
