Crack open the Tia Maria: Kath and Kim to return for anniversary special

Crack open the Tia Maria and footy franks, the cast of the iconic Aussie hit TV show Kath and Kim are believed to have reunited this week to film a 20th-anniversary special.

TV Tonight reports that stars Jane Turner (Kath) and Gina Riley (Kim) have been secretly filming at South Melbourne's NEP Studios alongside Magda Szubanski, who plays netball fanatic Sharon.

Australia fell in love with Kath and Kim when it hit our screens on ABC in 2002 before it moved to Channel Seven and wrapped up in 2007.

Its popularity continued after it dropped onto the streaming service Netflix.

In May there were rumours the show was being rebooted and would be available next year via a streaming platform.

TV Tonight reports Sonia Kruger and Celia Pacquola were among celebrities filming this week.

Despite the iconic Patterson Lakes home, where Kath and Kim lived, being demolished, TV Tonight reports producers had obtained interior photos prior.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports iconic characters are expected to join the anniversary special, including Kel, played by Glenn Robbins, Brett, played by Peter Rowsthorn, and our favourite shopkeepers Prue and Trude, played by Gina and Jane respectively.

The star confessed to TV Week that if the show made a comeback, the comedy would need to be modernised and updated.

Fans of the comedy have expressed excitement about the return on Twitter.

"Can't wait for this ... love, love, love Kath and Kim," one wrote.

"Kath and Kim coming back after all these years I am going to cry," another said.
