For Kate Winslet, one of many highlights working on The Regime was a heavily-improvised scene that left her downright breathless.

During episode 5 of the HBO show entitled “All Ye Faithful”, Winslet’s character Chancellor Elena Vernham and her love interest Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts) see a dream therapist (Julia Davis) to decipher the meaning behind Herbert’s nightmare. The therapist’s questionable interpretation — “This was a healthy dream, a lovely dream,” she insists — leaves room for debate and gives The Regime some levity.

The comical scenes were some of the most heavily-improvised moments from the show, Winslet, 48, explained during The Regime FYC panel event in Los Angeles on June 5.

“Actual pee. Actual pee down the inside of my thigh. I’m sorry to share that,” the actress mused, adding, “It was so f------ hilarious. I couldn’t breathe. … That was the only sequence that we really did improvise. We just went for it.”

“At one point, we were down on [the floor] chanting and slapping each other,” she continued. “It was completely out of control. But when you have someone like Julia Davis, an absolutely brilliant comedian … I'm afraid you just go for it.”

Showrunner, executive producer and writer Will Tracy admitted he watched the filming of the dreamy therapy scenes with “some pains.”

“I thought she [Julia Davis] could have been in every episode,” he admitted. “That would have been a really useful device to have her in every episode to track their relationship.”

During the FYC panel event, Winslet also discussed The Regime’s finale, in which Chancellor Vernham unexpectedly regained control of her fictitious country amid a civil war by agreeing to part ways with Herbert and aligning herself with the US.

Nine years after the civil war ends, she gave a speech to her people in which she reflected on the nation’s turbulent “road” to the present.

“Now we stand at the drawn of a new era — a new Europe,” she declared on the palace balcony, adding, “From here, we can look back at our past divisions and turmoil, not as mistakes but as opportunities for learning, opportunities for healing and for growth. It remains my deepest honor to lead you on this journey. I am no one without all of you!”

While the finale is rife with dramatic and suspenseful scenes, there are unexpected moments of humor, including scenes where Chancellor Vernham goes into hiding thanks to Tomas (Karl Markovics), calling him “my love" and trying to charm him with false compliments.

“When they were editing [the finale], I would go home, I'd be lying in bed at night, and I would be just thinking about episode 6 and how hilarious it was,” Winslet recalled. “I would turn to my husband, I'd say, ‘I'm sorry.’ … There’s this thing that happens in episode 6. [It was] hilarious moment after hilarious moment.”

Her character’s flirty voice was something Winslet developed and tried out on The Regime’s executive producers Jessica Hobbs and Stephen Frears before using it during production.

“I sat Stephen down [and tried out the voice]," she explained. “Do you see if I just maybe did that? And then a little bit and talk to you slightly flirtatiously, I could probably get you to do anything ... Luckily, he was laughing.”

At the FYC panel event, Winslet briefly whipped out Chancellor Vernham’s voice once more, which had her laughing at herself.

“God, it’s horrifying I can still do it [the voice and accent],” she said. “It came really easily. Felt quite nice, actually.”
