Kate Ritchie announces long-awaited return to acting in new TV show

Nine years after saying goodbye to Home and Away, Kate Ritchie has announced that she will be making her long-awaited return to acting.

Channel Seven announced during their Upfronts event on Tuesday that the Australia’s Got Talent judge will star alongside Erik Thompson in the upcoming series The Claremont Murders.

The two-part miniseries, which has already completed filming in Perth and will air in 2023, tells the story of one of Australia’s most notorious crimes.

“The disappearance of three young women in Perth in the late 1990s launched a 25-year investigation by the police and one tenacious journalist, all determined to seek justice,” the network described in a statement.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Kate shared a teaser image for The Claremont Murders alongside a caption about her co-star Aaron Glenane.

“What a humbling experience to work on this production,” she wrote. “To stand alongside you on set and be trusted with the telling of such a story. With Peter Andrikidis at the helm.”

The project marks Kate’s first scripted television role since she briefly reprised her character Sally Fletcher on Home and Away in 2013.

Kate’s radio news

Kate’s announcement comes just a few days after she announced that she would be stepping away from her Nova radio show Kate, Tim & Joel following a “hectic year”, but will return in 2023.

“As some of you may have heard from me on the show today, this past year has been hectic for my family and I. I have had much change, like many of you, in a short space of time and it has taken its toll,” she said.

“So I’ve made the decision to take a short break to have more time for myself and my family to re-energise. I am so proud that our Nova show, with Tim [Blackwell] and Joel [Creasey] and the team, is just powering along, going from strength to strength. We love you, our listeners and you seem to put up with us!”

Kate went on to promise that the break would only be temporary and she will return to the airwaves in the new year.

“Thank you to the team, to Nova and to all of our fabulous listeners for your support and understanding,” she continued. “Although it’s only going to be for a short time, I will miss you all… See you for a game of Quick Draw in 2023!”
