Karla Sofía Gascón Says People Around Fellow Oscar Nominee Fernanda Torres “Talk Badly About Me & ‘Emilia Pérez'”
UPDATED with statement: Karla Sofía Gascón made Oscar history as the first openly transgender person to be nominated in an acting category for her work in Emilia Pérez.
As the Academy Awards ceremony approaches, there seems to be some behind-the-scenes drama among the actors nominated in the Best Actress category. Gascón recently alleged that people working for Fernanda Torres, nominated for the film I’m Still Here, are saying unkind things about her and Emilia Pérez.

Karla Sofía Gascón On Her Journey To The Role Of A Lifetime In ‘Emilia Pérez’: “It’s Love’s Triumph”
“I don’t like that there’s a social media team that work around these people that are attempting to discredit my work and my film because that doesn’t take us anywhere,” Gascón said during an interview with Brazil’s Folha de São Paulo.
She continued, “To highlight someone else’s work, you don’t need to destroy others. You will never see me talking negatively about Fernanda Torres or her film, but on the contrary, I do see many people working around Fernanda Torres who talk badly about me, and Emilia Pérez. I think that speaks more about them and their film than of me.”
After Gascón’s comments went viral, the actress clarified what she meant in the interview.
“I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres, and it has been wonderful getting to know her over the past few months,” Gascón said in a statement. “In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience. Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.”
Torres won at the 2025 Golden Globes for her work in Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here, and Gascón said she was happy for her win. The Rebelde alum said she had not seen Torres’ film due to the workload promoting Emilia Pérez. However, Gascón said that Torres is “a wonderful woman, an excellent actress, and deserves all the recognition” for her work.
“This isn’t a competition, this is simply people that like one’s work or not,” Gascón added. “If [Torres] wins [the Oscar], great. If I win, same.”
Gascón and Torres are nominated in the Best Actress category alongside Demi Moore (The Substance), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), and Mikey Madison (Anora).
Torres recently took to Instagram to ask her followers “not create a situation” where they pit her against any of the other actresses nominated at the Oscars.
“Everybody deserves our affection. Let’s not feed hate,” Torres said on Instagram. “And I want to say that Karla Sofía Gascón, I love you forever. A generous woman, talented that deserves all our affection.”
