Kaia Gerber's sequin mini dress and matching cape is major festive fashion inspo
When it comes to nailing Christmas party dressing, there are key trends to look out for every year. Sequins, obvs. Nothing says party szn like a lot of sparkle. Velvet, too, is a favourite, suited to the winter season thanks to its heavy fabrication and rich, jewelled tones. But for the 2024 festive period, we've spotted a new look taking over both the high street and A-list wardrobes, too.
We're talking about capes. Not of the superhero variety. Rather, these capes are cropped to finish at the waistline, are intricately embellished or embroidered for a lightweight feel and pair perfectly with a coordinating ball gown, mini or cocktail dress.
One celeb fan is Elle Fanning, who attended the 2024 Governors Awards earlier this week looking like an Ice Queen in a frosty blue, fur-trimmed sheer cape and naked dress. And now Kaia Gerber has become the latest A-lister to throw her backing behind the look.
The daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford attended The Hollywood Reporter and Instagram: Next Gen 2024 event last night [Wednesday 20 November] wearing a 1920's flapper girl-esque nude mini dress entirely bejewelled with gold sequins and beads and finished with a double-tiered pearl-embellished hem. But the pièce de résistance of her ensemble was easily the coordinating cape she wore draped over her shoulders and knotted at the neck with silver beaded tassell cords.
Kaia added white pointelle knee socks to add a quirky finish to her retro attire, with blush-coloured bow ballet flats completing the 'fit. Her long brunette hair was styled in voluminous, bouncy waves and she opted for natural makeup with lashings of black mascara. Quite simply, she looked stunning!
As for how to recreate the look yourself, Marks & Spencer's sequin fringed cape has gone straight to the top of our wishlist:
Meanwhile, Needle & Thread is always our go to for glam New Year's Eve dresses and they have plenty of caped creations on offer, including this one-shoulder style:
Or, for something more subtle – you know, as subtle as you can get when it comes to cape – we love this Karen Millen muted black design that still brings plenty of drama:
