Justin Theroux was seriously impressed by his Beetlejuice Beetlejuice costars' unforgettable press tour fashion moments.

PEOPLE caught up with Theroux, 53, at the Ralph Lauren fashion show during the kickoff of New York Fashion Week on Thursday, Sept. 5. The actor — who dressed casually in jeans, a suede jacket and black shirt — shared his admiration for Jenna Ortega and Catherine O'Hara's commitment to method dressing while they promoted the sequel to the 1988 classic.

Both actresses channeled their characters and the movie's spooky vibes throughout the press tour, but their biggest standout moment came at the Venice Film Festival. Ortega, 21, arrived at the festival wearing a sheer red Dior Haute Couture gown that appeared to be a nod to the red wedding dress worn by Lydia (Winona Ryder) in the original Beetlejuice.

Meanwhile, O'Hara, 70, paid homage to Beetlejuice himself in a black-and-while jumpsuit, before transitioning into a gothic, structured black gown for the red carpet.

"We did the red carpet right," Theroux tells PEOPLE of the film's cast. "That Jenna Ortega did really well. I mean if you really look at the succinctness of her looks... and Catherine O'Hara with the craziest, greatest fashion swings that anyone has ever taken. Fantastic."

While he didn't go quite as hard in terms of method dressing, the actor recently told PEOPLE his style has always been "goth-adjacent."

"I mean, there’s a really good case to be made that I haven't changed what I've been wearing since I was 14," he added. “I was sort of emo, punk, whatever you want to call it back in the day."

To this day, he said he still favors "a boot and a black jean," as evidenced by his own press tour ensembles which leaned into black-on-black styles, barring the white suit jacket he wore on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival.
