John Lennon's Son Julian Shares Bold Opinion on His Role in The Beatles' 'Inner Circle'

Julian Lennon, the eldest son of The Beatles member John Lennon, opened up about his complicated relationship with his father and his world-famous musical group.

The 61-year-old, whose mother is Lennon's first wife, Cynthia Lennon, spoke with The Guardian about the "recent resurgence in interest" surrounding The Beatles and his thoughts on recent releases like the Martin Scorsese-produced documentary Beatles '64.

"It’s news to me half the time. I’m not part of the inner circle—I never have been," he said of all the recent projects about The Beatles, including a docuseries produced by Peter Jackson called The Beatles: Get Back. "You have to realise that when Dad left, when I was between three and five (it was a bit of a process), it was just mum and me, and we had nothing to do with the Beatles or Dad. I visited him on the odd occasion but we were very much on the outside."

But Julian went on to reference his younger brother, Yoko Ono and Lennon's son Sean, as he praised their sibling relationship, saying, "I’m thankful that Sean and I get on like a house on fire – we’re best buddies and he tells me what he can, but things are pretty secret on the Beatles front."

While the two brothers are many years apart in age,—with Julian born in 1963 and Sean born in 1975—they appear to be quite close, with Julian telling Esquire in 2023, "We’ve never had a fight in our life. It’s such bull."

In his new interview with The Guardian, Julian elaborated on his feelings about not being that involved with any ongoing Beatles projects, saying that it was "Extraordinarily strange but I’m not upset about it."

"I’d rather be excited and impressed by what they did and continue to do. As a fan, I’m just as curious as anybody else, although I do find myself going, how is it possible that there’s another Beatles film?" he concluded.

Julian followed in his father's footsteps into the music industry, and his latest release is the 2022 album Jude.
