Chip and Joanna Gaines are opening up about the first home they shared together after they got married.

The Magnolia Network founders described what their abode was like while appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Monday, June 17. In a clip shared jointly by Joanna and the talk show’s official Instagram account, The Stories We Tell author explains that the state of their Texas home made her want “to cry” after the couple returned from their New York City honeymoon.

“We get back from our honeymoon. We stayed at the Drake Hotel. We used our entire honeymoon money for the Drake Hotel,” she tells host Kelly Clarkson.

“We get back. He had bought this house that I did cry about,” she continues, gesturing towards her husband. “The electricity was shut off. College athletes had lived in the house that semester before.”

Chip then jumps in, “I can still smell this house.”

“It was June in Texas heat if you can imagine, and they had all these indoor pets. So we step in and he carries me across the threshold. And we get hit,” she says, referring to the stench of the home.

“We slept on the carpet — and I was very kind and sweet. I did cry myself to sleep. Maybe I am emotional… but who wouldn’t? I still remember what that carpet looks like.”
