Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson 'Have Been Separated for a While': She Hasn't Taken Split 'Lightly' (Exclusive Source)
Simpson announced her split from Johnson on Monday, Jan. 13
Though Jessica Simpson recently revealed she's split with her husband of 10 years, Eric Johnson, the pair have been separated for some time.
One day after the "Take My Breath Away" singer announced the news in a statement to PEOPLE, a source shared more insight on their decision.
"They have been separated for a while," the insider tells PEOPLE exclusively, adding that "Jess is doing OK."
The announcement came just as Simpson is gearing up to launch her musical comeback. She's still "excited about her new album," the source says, but "separating is not anything she's taken lightly."
On Monday, Jan. 13, the singer and businesswoman, 44, confirmed her marriage had come to an end.
"Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage," Simpson said in a statement to PEOPLE. "Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family."
The pair — who tied the knot in 2014 — share three kids: daughters Maxwell "Maxi" Drew, 12, and Birdie Mae, 5, and son Ace Knute, 11. According to a source, the exes are "both great parents."
"They have already figured out a new schedule for the kids," a source told PEOPLE.
"The kids will always come first. They are co-parenting," the source added. "She's grateful for her kids."
In the months leading up to the announcement, there were subtle signs the couple's marriage was on the rocks.
In November, the former NFL star, 45, was spotted on a walk in Los Angeles without his wedding band. However, even before that, fans noticed Simpson hadn't been wearing her rings for several months on social media.
At the time, a source told PEOPLE they "very much live separate lives."
Meanwhile, Simpson teased her musical comeback on Instagram and shared a series of photos of herself in the studio.

"Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic," she captioned the post, adding that her upcoming music "comeback is personal, it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve 🎶 🎼 🤍🖤"
Simpson's last feed post with Johnson on Instagram was for his 44th birthday in September 2023.
One month prior, Simpson opened up to PEOPLE about their marriage and detailed how he "embraces" her career.
"I don't find it hard to love anybody, but I have always thought that I was hard to love, that I was too much for people, or my schedule was too demanding," she shared. "He knows my heart and understands my heart more than anyone I've ever met in my life."
At the time, Simpson added that their relationship always felt "easy" and they've always tried to "keep the romance there, even with three kids."
