Jennifer Lopez Says Her Upcoming Movie Musical Is 'Very Different' and 'More Indie' Than 'Wicked' (Exclusive)
After the massive blockbuster success of Wicked, everyone is on the lookout for the next big movie musical adaptation. If you were eyeing the upcoming movie version of Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Jennifer Lopez, however, you might want to think again. That's because Lopez says it's a completely different beast.
When Parade recently sat down with Lopez to discuss her upcoming sports biopic Unstoppable, we also chatted with the actress, singer and dancer about her work in Bill Condon's adaptation of the 1993 Tony Award-winning musical Kiss of the Spider Woman. And while no film studio would pass up an opportunity to earn $700 million at the box office, perhaps Lopez's film has different aspirations.

"First of all congratulations to everybody who did Wicked," Lopez says. "That is a big commercial musical. I think Kiss of the Spider Woman is a little bit different."
Describing the film, she continues, "It's a beautiful movie, but it's very different than Wicked. It feels in a way more indie, but it's impactful and important and relevant. I'm very excited for people to see it."
Lopez won't have to wait long as the film is scheduled to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 26. The film, which has yet to secure distribution, will likely hit theaters sometime later this year if all goes according to plan.
The stage musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, which features a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb, tells the story of a gay hairdresser imprisoned in Argentina in 1981 who escapes the horrors of jail by imagining a vampy screen actress. Lopez will be playing the imagined actress in the film, a role originated by Chita Rivera on Broadway, and for which she won the Tony.
Tonatiuh and Diego Luna also star in the upcoming film. Condon, who wrote and directed the film, previously wrote the scripts for Chicago, The Greatest Showman and Dreamgirls, the last of which he also directed.
While Lopez previously starred in musicals like Selena and Marry Me, this will be her first appearance in a stage-to-film adaptation. Following her success in Hustlers and its ultimate Oscar snub, fans are eager to see the legendary performer sink her teeth into another meaty role, and hope this might be just the one.
