James Cameron Took Break from Editing “Avatar 3” to Call Zoe Saldaña After Her Golden Globes Win: He 'Believes in Me'
Zoe Saldaña's movie 'Emilia Perez' won four total awards at the Golden Globes on Jan. 5
James Cameron was one of the first people to reach out to Zoe Saldaña following her win at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards.
After Saldaña, 46, won honors for her supporting role in Emilia Pérez on Sunday, Jan. 5, the actress told reporters in the press room, "I was sitting in the audience and I received a message from James Cameron, who's somewhere in New Zealand right now, cutting Avatar: Fire and Ash. And he, after all these years, believes in me."
Saldaña has worked with Cameron, 70, dating back to 2009's original blockbuster Avatar. She costars in the series with Sam Worthington and expects to continue portraying her character Neytiri through the franchise's three additional sequels currently in development. "So that, to me, nourishes my desire to continue growing as an artist," Saldaña said of retaining Cameron's support over the years.
In the press room following her win, Saldaña fielded questions about her success as the star of many of the world's highest grossing films ever, her recent turn to television and all of the critical acclaim Emilia Pérez has received — the Netflix film won four awards at the Globes, including best musical or comedy film.
"I feel an absolute joy. Joy because there's a sense of presence. I've been in this industry for 25 years. From the moment I transitioned from being a dancer to an actor, I was in my late teens, early twenties, not knowing what was ahead of me," Saldaña told reporters. "And what I have witnessed is I've always been employed. I've always had good human beings and amazing undeniable talent, undeniably talented filmmakers believe in me and bet on me, trust me. So this recognition is paramount for my continuation as an artist."

"And there are no books. I'm happy. I'm just — I'm 46. There was a moment a couple of years ago where I was sort of thinking about plan Bs," she added. "Like do I go into a homestead and start planting a garden and baking goods? But the truth is I'm an artist through and through and I need to create every day. "
