Ilona Maher Thinks Her Broken Nose 'Genuinely Scared a Few People on the Street'

Rugby player Ilona Maher recently suffered from what she referred to as a “lil knock” on the pitch, resulting in a broken nose.

Now, the Olympian is opening up about how people are reacting to her visible injury, using her signature sense of humor to bring some levity to a painful situation.

It all started on Jan. 18 when the Bristol Bears player got injured while facing off against the Leicester Tigers. She shared a photo of the aftermath on Instagram, writing “All good, everyone” alongside a photo of herself beaming and making a thumbs-up sign with her right hand and holding a bag of ice in her left. What looked to be a stopper or gauze was shoved up her left nostril.

Though there were visible scrapes on the bridge of her nose and chin and blood stains could be seen on the front of her jersey, Maher appeared to be in high spirits as she posted again on Instagram later that day.

This time her post took the form of a video in which she held the same bag of ice, now melted, and lip-synced to audio from her Dancing With the Stars run when, after judge Carrie Ann Inaba asked if she was OK, she responded, “been better, Carrie Ann.”

On Jan. 20, the Vermont native took to Instagram again to joke about her current predicament. “I think I have genuinely scared a few people on the street” she captioned a mirror selfie video in which she coyly looked at the camera and demurely looked down as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, her bruises and stitches clearly visible in the video.

Text that read “felt cute” was placed over the video as “the way that i am” by Abby Powledge played soulfully in the background, prompting fans to jump into the comments to compliment the athlete while leaning into her teasing nature.

“So sorry girl but on a positive note that purple is making them eyes POP,” said one commenter, while another agreed, writing, “It’s the little wisp of hair sticking up for me 😂 (you’re beautiful ❤️).”

“Omg even your bruises are pretty... get well soon,” wished a third fan, while another chimed in to say, “Still beautiful, just more colorful!”
