Hiroyuki Sanada Urges Young Actors & Creators To “Never Give Up” As He Accepts Golden Globe For ‘Shōgun’

After landing his first Emmy award in September, Hiroyuki Sanada landed his first Golden Globe tonight for his portrayal of Lord Toranaga in FX’s Shōgun. He also became the second Asian actor or American actor of Asian decent to win the Lead Actor In Drama Series Golden Globe, following Lee Jung-jae’s 2021 trophy for Squid Game.

He was the first of four wins for the period drama Sunday, victories that included Best TV Series – Drama.

In his speech, Sanada thanked FX, Disney, Hulu as well as the cast and crew of Shōgun “for sharing this amazing journey.” He also acknowledged “everyone who has been in my life, all of you have brought me here.”

Sanada wrapped his speech with a message for those coming after him.

“For the young actors and creators in the world, please be yourself, believe in yourself and never give up. Good luck!”

In the epic drama series based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, veteran Sanada stars as Lord Toranaga, the ultimate strategist, whose intricate web ultimately served to unify 17th century Japan. In addition to acting, Sanada also serves as a producer on Shōgun, which was renewed for a second season after breaking ratings records for FX and Hulu. Production is slated to begin later this year.
