Having car trouble? Maybe The Fonz can help!

On the Oct. 25 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Henry Winkler joined host Drew Barrymore for a chat, which included a round of “Fast Five” questions about his iconic Happy Days character, Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli.

But instead of the host questioning Winkler, 78, live on the show’s set, Barrymore threw to pre-recorded video of herself dressed as The Fonz, asking the questions in character.

First up, Barrymore-as-Fonzie wanted to know what Winkler thought his character would be up to in 2024.

“Good question. What would he be up to? He would own a franchise of garages. That’s what I’m thinking,” Winkler said of his lovable greaser character, who worked as a car mechanic on the beloved sitcom.

Winkler also had some advice for “The Fonz” on “how to treat a lady.”

“This, I know for sure,” he said. “Do not snap your fingers at a woman. It worked on TV, but they will break your fingers.”

Drew-as-Fonz went on to grill the Emmy winner about the infamous 1977 Happy Days episode in which his character, wearing short swim trunks and his signature leather biker jacket, water-skied over a shark. The ridiculous moment inspired the concept of “jumping the shark,” which has become shorthand for when TV shows have lost the plot, introduce absurd stunts or plot elements or have generally outlasted their welcome.

“When Fonzie jumped the shark, did you know it?” Barrymore-as-Fonzie asked.

“No, nor did I care,” Winkler explained, “because we were number one for many years after that. And you know, at that time there were newspapers, people read newspapers and they would — every time they mentioned ‘jump the shark,’ they had a picture of me water skiing. And at that time I had great legs.”

Drew-as-Fonz’s final question was more of a request, asking Winkler to turn on a jukebox the way his character did on Happy Days. This prompted Winkler to remind the host that he’d done the same thing on the 2024 Emmys, when he and costar Ron Howard appeared together onstage in a replica of the Happy Days set to mark the show’s 50th anniversary.

“I had 45 seconds with Ron Howard and we were in Arnold's,” he recalled. “Fifty years of chemistry shot back into the room like it was yesterday.”
