Heidi and Spencer Pratt's Relationship Timeline, From 'The Hills' to Now
The co-stars of 'The Hills' met at a nightclub in 2006.
Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are two names synonymous with the early aughts. Like their fellow stars of the era, Leighton Meester and Adam Brody, the Pratts captured the attention of teens all across the country when they co-starred in six seasons of The Hills alongside Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port, and Audrina Patridge. Unlike the show, however, the Pratts are still going strong nearly two decades later.
Their meet-cute took place at a Los Angeles nightclub in 2006, and Heidi says she knew Spencer was the one right away. "I pretty much told everyone I was going to marry him and that I loved him," she told Vice in 2016. "[Everyone] thought I was crazy."
Turns out she was right. In 2008, the couple tied the knot in Mexico. In true reality T.V. fashion, they also had a second wedding in 2009, which was televised and aired on season 5 of The Hills. Since then they've welcomed two sons, Gunner and Ryker. Most recently, they lost their home in the devastating L.A. wildfires.
Ahead, here's a full timeline of Heidi and Spencer Pratt's reality T.V.-approved love story.
2006: Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt meet at a nightclub.
It was essentially love at first sight, according to Heidi. "I was like cartoon goo-goo eyes, heart falling out of my head," she told Vice.
2007: Spencer Pratt joins the cast of 'The Hills.'
A few months after they began dating, Spencer nabbed a spot on The Hills. The couple was dubbed "Speidi" and began crafting subplots to garner more attention from fans. Spencer later explained that "I was treating the show like a producer because I literally just made a show on Fox," he told Vice, referring to Princes of Malibu, which ran from 2005-06. "I didn't know how to be on-camera talent."
November 2008: The couple elopes in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Surprising everyone, Spencer and Heidi opted to forgo the pomp and circumstance of a celebrity wedding and quietly tied the knot in Mexico instead. "I was just putting it out there, how easy it would be with no drama," Pratt later told Us Weekly. "It was exactly the wedding I wanted."
"They obviously adore each other and are very committed to one another," their co-star Audrina Patridge told People at the time. "Heidi and Spencer seem like the types who would want a lavish wedding full of friends and family. I do think it's very romantic that they eloped."
April 25, 2009: The couple gets married, again.
The second wedding was a tad more lavish than the first. It aired on season 5 of The Hills and afterwards, Heidi Montag changed her name to Heidi Pratt.
June 2009: Heidi and Spencer Pratt join the cast of another reality T.V. show.
Though The Hills didn't actually end until July 2010, the Pratts had already begun to set their sights elsewhere when they appeared on I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2009. The quit the game three times and eventually left for good when Heidi got sick and had to go to the hospital.
March 2010: Heidi fires Spencer as her manager.
The firing ended a four year-long management deal that began when the couple met back in 2006.
"No longer is my husband the face of my business or managing my career," Heidi told People at the time. "I am going to have [Malibu-based psychic] Aiden Chase help manage my new life and career in a very different and positive way with light and love. The time for change is now. Never mix business and pleasure. We are no longer Speidi but Spencer and Heidi."
July 30, 2010: Heidi Pratt files for divorce.
After separating in June, the couple officially called it quits in July when Heidi initiated divorce proceedings.
"Heidi has amended her petition for separation and today has filed a petition for dissolution of marriage from Spencer Pratt," her lawyer, Jodeane Farrell, told People at the time. "The couple has agreed they would like their divorce to be finalized in a timely manner in an out-of-court settlement. Both parties are amicable with each other and over the possibility of finalizing their divorce."
Spencer responded by calling the couple's marriage "a show."
"I love Heidi but our marriage was a show," he told People. "It was part of The Hills world, and that world is on a sound stage."
August 2010: The couple are spotted together in Costa Rica.
Amid ongoing divorce proceedings and threats to release a sex tape from Spencer, the couple were spotted together in Costa Rica. Heidi had traveled there first and Spencer later joined her.
“I had to bring the puppies down and help them move in,” he told People at the time. “[Heidi] thought I was going to leave, but I’m not. I didn’t want to get divorced I have nothing in Malibu, I’m homeless, I’m nothing without her.”
Heidi confirmed that Spencer had joined her, telling People, “Everything was calm and going smoothly with the divorce. We were really getting along and it was amazing he was being so thoughtful to help me move. Then things turned.”
By "turned," Heidi was referring to the sex tape that Spencer was threatening to release if she didn't "want to do the new reality show with me."
“I can get $5 million from a sex tape, but I really don’t want to do that," he continued. "It’s not the way I want things to be. Heidi is furious with me but I need to look out for myself.”
September 30, 2010: Heidi and Spencer Pratt get back together.
The couple resolved their differences and reconnected that fall. In an exclusive interview with People, they said, "We are back together trying to make things work. [Costa Rica] really put things in perspective. We do love each other and realized we do want to spend the rest of our lives together."
November 14, 2010: Heidi and Spencer Pratt renew their wedding vows.
Following their reconciliation, the couple renewed their vows at a beachfront property in Carpinteria, California.
July 2016: The couple reveals they are broke.
In another exclusive interview with People, Heidi and Spencer confessed to having spent almost the entirety of their earnings from The Hills. "We were keeping up with the Joneses, but we were going against Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes," Spencer explained. "We should have stayed in our reality T.V. lane."
The pair had spent their fortune on lavish dinners, wardrobes, waitstaff, and a crystal collection. By 2016, they were broke. With almost no money left, they were eventually forced to move into Spencer's parents's vacation home to save money on rent. "Everyone else on our cast had houses and we had nothing to show for what we'd done," Heidi said. "I was like, the haters were right! It was sad."
January 2017: Heidi and Spencer Pratt return to reality T.V.
Six months after revealing their financial difficulties, the couple were back on the television screen, this time for Celebrity Big Brother: All Stars vs New Stars. They stayed in the house for 25 days until they were evicted.

With the hopes that the surgery would improve her chance of conceiving another child, Heidi underwent a hysteroscopic polypectomy procedure that removed two uterine polyps.

One month after the big announcement, the Pratts sat down for an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight to reveal the sex of the baby.

Heidi added: “We'll explore what's happening off camera and on reality TV, what's happening outside the fame of a paparazzi photo and more from the side of Hollywood and entertainment that you don't get to see."
