Harley Quinn Boss Discusses DC Comedy’s Future, As Season 5 Finale Serves Up Much Closure

The following contains spoilers from the March 20 episode/Season 5 finale of Max’s Harley Quinn animated series.

“You wanna f–k s–t up?”

“You had me at ‘Wanna f–k.'”

With that highly romantic and perfectly on-brand exchange, Harley and Ivy (voiced by Kaley Cuoco and Lake Bell) seemed poised to ride off into the smog-filled Gotham sunset at the close of Harley Quinn‘s Season 5 finale, now streaming on Max.

After all, Harley & Co. in this week’s episode handily dispatched with all manner of threats. They successfully pitted an increasingly mad Lena Luthor against her brother Lex, to the point that the sinister sibs wound up miniaturized and in Frankette’s tummy. Brainiac meanwhile set himself on a collision course with his home planet — with his (dead) wife and (very dead) Koko “at his side” — but not before kindly directing Harley and Ivy to an escape pod.

Alas, said escape pod was hammered by the debris resulting from Brainiac’s suicide mission, and for a hot moment there it appeared that Harley and Ivy would perish in the blackness of outer space.

Luckily, Superman chose a fine time for his first appearance in a long time, saving the lovebirds and returning them to Earth! For good measure, Supes then moved Metropolis closer to Gotham, so that Harley and Ivy could more easily enjoy the skyline of their Season 5 vacation spot. Harley and Ivy in turn came to better appreciate stinky, crime-filled Gotham and their more unusual-than-ever found family. And with the exchange cited above, the duo looked forward to the future.

But does Harley Quinn have a future? As of today/finale day, it has yet to be renewed. So, did the series purposely hedge its bets with that closure-filled finale and its hint of a “happily ever after” for its lead couple?

“Not really,” showrunner Dean Lorey told TVLine a few weeks back. “I mean, in my mind it’s not a series finale. I don’t think any of us making it want it to be a series finale.

“But it is the end of Season 5,” Lorey noted, “so if that were to be it, I think it is a nice series finale.”

Make no mistake, though, “we certainly plan to have more seasons,” Lorey asserted.

Lorey previously alluded at Harley Quinn‘s uncertain fate in a midseason preview for TVLine, when discussing how the instantly aborted Gotham Sirens storyline could ostensibly one day be properly explored.

“You could, in a future season — if there is one, God willing — jump back and pick up that season as a flashback and do the Gotham City Sirens season,” he said.
