Halsey Channels “Freaky Friday” as She Performs 'Ego' Live for the First Time at the 2024 MTV VMAs
The 2024 Video Music Awards are currently airing live on Sept. 11 from New York's UBS Arena
Halsey just channeled Freaky Friday's Pink Slip at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the pop star, 29, (who uses she/they pronouns) took the stage at New York's UBS Arena and debuted their latest single "Ego."
At the start of their performance, Halsey — who sported a white collared shirt with a black tie, oversized denim shorts and black lace-up boots — entered on a bike and joined a band in a faux garage to sing the pop-punk anthem. Halsey was also joined by Victoria De Angelis from Måneskin on bass.
"I think that I should try to kill my ego/'Cause if I don't, my ego might kill me," Halsey sang while strumming the guitar. "I'm all grown up but somehow lately/I'm acting like a f---ing baby/I'm really not as happy as I seem."
In the 2003 comedy Freaky Friday, Lindsay Lohan's character and her friends form an all-girl garage band and perform rock music.

Last month, it was announced that Halsey would be performing at the VMAs alongside Lenny Kravitz, Lisa, Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro.
On Friday, Sept. 6, the "Without Me" singer released "Ego" and its accompanying music video.
Written and directed by Halsey, the visual features two versions of the musician — one who's feminine and one who's more androgynous — who face-off as they eat dinner, chase one another around a house and try to kill one another.
In the final moments of the video, the more femme-presenting version of Halsey hides in the back of their alter-ego's car and chokes them.
The '90s alt-tinged number showcases Halsey grappling with how they've been perceived by the public and their internal distress.
