Gwen Stefani Details 'Complete Turmoil' of Initially Dating Blake Shelton

Fans have loved watching Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton's love story unfold in recent years—and recently, the No Doubt frontwoman opened up about the challenges they faced in the early days of their relationship.

"We had just met, and it was chaos. Both of our lives were in complete turmoil, all over the ground. Nothing could save us at that point," Stefani told People. "There was a point where I was like, 'I can't even talk to you. This is insane. I already have enough problems. This is not happening anymore. We're not going to text or nothing.'"

When they first got together, Stefani was in the process of divorcing Gavin Rossdale and Shelton was in the middle of his split with Miranda Lambert. But Shelton didn't let that stop him from using his musical talent to win Stefani over.

"I think he really wanted to impress me, because he doesn't really write songs as much as he used to. And I love writing songs. That's everything to me. If I want to feel like I have any kind of purpose or any kind of value or anything, it's about writing a song. That's where I get my fulfillment," Stefani explained.

The two ended up collaborating on the country duet "Go Ahead and Break My Heart," which they released in 2016.

"He sent it to me, and it was a half-written song. He was like, 'Help me finish this.' So I wrote him the verse back—the second verse on the song—and it's just over text," she said. "That was our first song that we ever wrote together. We were never even in the same room, but we were writing a song to each other."

Ultimately, Shelton and Stefani married in 2021.

During a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Stefani also made a shocking confession about her husband.

“I was looking back in my life, at all of the photos, like physical and inner beauty of myself,” she explained. “I was thinking about eighth grade, I’m like staring in the mirror in the gym, right, like by myself going, ‘Am I cute? I can’t tell.’ You know when you’re trying to figure out if you are or not?”

The "Hollaback Girl" singer said she looked at old photos to see when she felt “the prettiest” and when she liked herself “the most.”

“It was right when Blake started loving me,” she shared. “I wanted to write a song about that, because when you actually feel love for the first time, they reflect you. You can see yourself in them.”
