Guy Sebastian has revealed the terrifying moment American police held a gun to his head when he was living in Los Angeles.

The singer shared the story while appearing on KIIS FM's iHeart Radio Countdown last week.

Guy explained that while living in LA, his car had been illegally towed, so he reported it as stolen to the police.

However, he eventually tracked it down and called the police to let them know that he'd found it and while he was on hold he went to a carwash.

"So I’m sitting in this car wash, washing this car, and suddenly all these police converge on me with guns drawn," he said.

The singer said that because he'd reported the car as stolen earlier that day, he didn't think it was really their fault.

"It’s not really their fault because to them I’m driving a stolen car," he said.

He attempted to explain the situation, but was told to "shut up" and get on the ground.

Guy did as instructed, "So I get on the ground…[one of the police officers] had a knee on me as well and he’s pulled my phone out of my pocket and thrown it across the floor and smashed it. And I was like… dude 'what have you done that for?'"

"He actually had a gun pressed into my forehead," he said. "It was full-on. I could feel the metal of this gun and there was so many of them."

Thankfully, a female officer realised what had happened after looking at the car's papers on the front seat and the situation was diffused.

Guy was uninjured and is now able to laugh it off as a misunderstanding, "They deal with extremely heavy handed members of the public and criminals."

He added, "It’s not like here. Everyone’s got a gun."
