Gut-wrenching way Prince Harry discovered Queen's death

Prince Harry only discovered his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II had died after reading it in online reports, multiple palace sources claim.

Harry was rushing to be by the Queen's side at her Balmoral residence in Scotland as her health deteriorated, but when he arrived on September 8 she had already passed away.

A Buckingham Palace insider told Page Six that members of the royal family did not phone Harry to break the news the Queen had died, and he only found out through online news reports after he landed in Scotland in the afternoon.

Another source however told The Telegraph Prince Harry was informed of the death mid-flight, five minutes before a public statement announcing the news to the world was released.

"The King was adamant that the official statement must not be released until all members of the family had been informed," the source said.

"That was a father talking because he cares."

Photos of Harry arriving at Balmoral following the news of the Queen's death showed how distraught the royal was during the tough time.

While the Duke and Duchess’ spokesperson originally stated that Meghan Markle would accompany Harry to Scotland, she ended up staying behind.

He travelled to Balmoral separately from his brother Prince William, who arrived with Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, after taking a flight to Aberdeen airport.

Today show royal commentator Dickie Arbiter said at the time it was "extraordinary" that Harry didn’t travel earlier with other members of the family, adding it was "very sad" that Harry arrived after the death of Her Majesty.

Following the Queen's death, King Charles appeared the extend Harry and Meghan an olive branch amid tensions over their decision to step down as senior working royals.

In King Charles' first speech after becoming the new monarch, he announced that his wife Camilla now had the title of Queen Consort, before adding that Prince William and Kate would now be known as the Prince and Princess of Wales.

He then sent "love" to the estranged Harry and Meghan.

“I want to also express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas,” he said.
